Thoughts on Niners Picks

I keep reading people's opinions on what we shoulda/coulda done in last season's draft and go me think what I thought of Niners' drafts gone by. I've gone back as far as I can really remember for first day picks and what I thought as the pick was announced. I'm being 100% honest and if you want to add your thoughts I'd be interested to hear them...

2009
Crabtree - Absolutely delighted, thought he would be a star.
Coffee - Kind of disappointed, thought we could've found a back up later in the draft.
Liked the fraft tho, esp the late Jean-Francois pick and the Boone pick up.

2008
Balmer - Hadn't seen enough of him and didn't have a real opinion.
Rachal - Very happy, still think that as he gains experience he'll be a monster
Smith - Delighted, I rated this guy and didn't think he be there.

2007
Willis - I can't remember anybody who didn't want him. Delighted
Staley - Delighted again.
Hill - Another good pick up.
McDonald - Thought this might be a bit high for a guy with his injury history.

2006
Davis - Loved the pick. Thought he would be a great one.
Lawson - Thought he'd be our stud pass rusher.
Williams - Wasn't happy drafting a PR/KR in 3rd. A Wisonsin WR???

2005
Smith - I desperately wanted Rodgers. Wasn't best pleased but thought Smith could do it.
Baas - Delighted. I'd seen him man handle people.
Gore - An injury prone, slow RB in the 3rd? Noooooo.
Snyder - Hadn't seen him play but liked the O-Line pick.

2004
Woods - Was delighted with Woods but we'd moved out of a position to draft Wilfork.
Smiley - Really happy with the pick.
Spencer - Liked his size and speed. Thought we'd got a good one.
Hamilton - See above.

2003
Harris - Brilliant pick, was suprised he'd fallen to us.
Adams - Short but I thought he was stout and quick enough to make a difference.
Williams - Thought he'd be an excellent speed rusher.

2002
Rumph - Pretty high on Rumph, would rather have had Sheppard but I thought tall CBs were essential.
Rasheed - Hadn't much of him.

2001
Carter - Ecstatic. Thought he'd be an All Pro.
Winborn - Delighted - was thinking Sam Mills.
Barlow - Suprised and very happy.
so basically you were excited about every pick

Bored and tired when I wrote this but on reflection I might've used that a bit too often...

No. He was delighted.
I think the Niners have done pretty well with our picks. Especially now that Lawson and DAvis are starting to play better. I think we have had our share of bombs, Williams, and Wallace to mention a few, but overall I think we have done well in the last 5 years. If Crabtree pans out we will have another good draft. I think Gore, Staley, Willis, McDonald, R. Smith. T. Brown have turned out well for us. I think Balmer is on his way.

This next draft will be interesting because we need so much oline help. We still need a monster OLB pass rusher but if Lawson continues to improve and if Brooks starts to make plays that may not be as pressing a need. But what is clear is that we need significant improvement on the oline. We need our backups to be starters in waiting rather than backups. So RT, OG and Center are very important for us. I hope Boone can develop to the point of taking the RT but we need improved foot speed from him.

So hope this upcoming draft will settle some more positions for us. So pass rusher, NT to backup Franklin, Safety/CB, RB if Coffee does not work out, but definitely RT, OG, Center.
So Okung, Cody would be a nice combo for our 1st round.
2009
Crabtree - happy he fell, but WR take 3 years to show if they will make it, so we must wait and see.......but college numbers cant be over shadowed hes got the skill set, lets wait and see if they carry over to the pros......
Coffee- to early to tell, doesnt seem like a starter, maybe career backup

2008
Balmer - jury is still out has 2 years to prove hes not a bust, must show up
Rachal - fits our smash mouth scheme, must develop
Smith - hasnt got a chance to show whats hes got...wait and see or good bye

2007
Willis - HOF bound....enough said
Staley - good pick not elite but gets job done
Hill - he gets one more year to show up or good bye
McDonald - has shown to be a great value pick when healthy

2006
Davis - has taken time to develop but no VERNON DAVIS IS HERE....after 4 games
Lawson - finally shown some promise after injury, wait and see
Williams - wasted 3rd round pick off team

2005
Smith - has gotten the raw end of everything, ashame considered bust
Baas - hasnt showed up yet for being the 33rd player taken
Gore- struck gold in the 3d round
Snyder - good back up...nothing more nothing less

I will start from the 2005 draft
They have manage to land some premium players, but they haven't done much for buidling depth on the team.

Willis and Gore are obviously stars. Staley might not be elite but is very good. VD is finally in an offense that will utilize him and also should become very good. Rachal and Balmer have potential to be come solid, and Lawson and Haralson have managed to be solid contributors, as well.

Snyder and Baas were taken in the same year and everyone thought they would be cornerstones of the OL for years to come. That certainly hasn't worked out.
Not sure I get your "A Wisconsin WR." If you don't like Williams fine. But they have turned out some good and even great WR's. Don't blame the whole University based on one guy not turning out (Williams).

See these 3 for example.

Wisonsin were not a passing force in college football, I hadn't seen much of him and like I say this was my initial thoughts at the moment when he was drafted. Just being honest.

Well, if I remember rightly, most fans were pretty happy at the drafting of Harris.
