Ok, so since everyone seems to be butting heads about who to start Hill or Smith for the rest of the season, I have one question for everyone. Since Alex Smith "sucks" and Shaun Hill can't manage a game as well as everyone thought he would, is there a college QB that would be a great #1 pick for the Niners??? Or do we keep what QB's we have and hope for a turn around from one of them.

Damn, we spent a pick in the last draft on a QB we haven't even developed yet. Nate Davis was one of the top reted QB's until teams heard about his disablity. I'd hate to think we wasted a pick just to let him sit for one season.

I do not think we can answer that question until we see if Smith has improved enough to warrant not spending another top pick. If he gets his shot and doesn't look any better than Hill, we have to start looking elsewhere. Shaun Hill is not gonna get it done over the long haul for us either way.

Nate Davis IS the future, and I think Ninerbrass is banking on this. What we have to do, as an organization, is bridge the present to the point where we feel Davis is ready to take over. I hope we go into Free Agency and pickup a veteran QB that can give us 2-3 good years before we unleash Davis.............

What scares me the most about Davis, is that I don't think he is a "game manager" type of quarterback.
He is "gun slinger" type, who likes to throw the ball and make plays.
Singletary seems to want the boring, throw some passes when desperate, score 10 points "game manager", who throws the ball out-of-bounds and avoids the turnover.
Nate Davis does not seem to fit the boring philosophy we have on offense, and if we try and turn him into that, he is going to have problems adjusting.

If Singletary contiunes this bland philosophy on football, he wont last more than 2 years. I just hope Shanahan and/or Holmgren are around in that time; Id love to see what Shanahan could do with Davis (as Holmgren did with Favre).
Now thatd be special..........

Im pretty sure Singletary wants a conservative offense because Shaun Hill doesn't have any range.

Nate Davis is not the future...at least not yet. We'll pretty much just need to wait til the draft to see what they do.
IMO 3 things happen.
1. When our pick rolls around the niners see a QB they consider to be a franchise type qb AND don't think Nate Davis can be anything special - then they draft the rookie.
2. They think enough of Nate Davis to pass on a QB completely
3. They don't like the qbs in this draft and aren't sold on Nate Davis and choose to wait til next draft.
Personally I think it will be #1. I like everything I've seen from Davis but I've seen way too many guys shine in preseason and do nothing during the games that count. If you don't know 100% you have a franchise QB on your roster and one is staring you in the face during the draft - YOU TAKE HIM.

I think if they go into the offseason with the idea to make Davis the starting quarterback & upgrade the O-line it would make things much better for Singletary & the whole team.

With Davis being a 5th round pick it means we have no expectations on him. Meaning if he develops into a good QB great, if he doesn't no big deal since we don't have much invested in him. It also means if we have a chance at a top QB, then we can go after him.

i dont see how the 49ers draft a qb until they see davis on the football field in a real game.
unless he flat out sucks in practice , he is going to get a shot.
Hill would still be a second or third stringer in the NFL
Smith cant beat out hill , i doubt he is in the nfl that much longer.

Davis gives them alot of flexibility....
More flexability then Shaun Hill does.
Hill gives them a reason to not START a young QB.
Davis gives them a reason to not HAVE to draft one unless then are 100% sold.
If davis is the next guy...as a fan I am really happy about that.

i would want to see him play against a real nfl defenses before making this proclamation---he saw nothing of what the big boys run in real games, during his exhibition game stint...can he read defenses and play to the speed of the game---unknown as of this time

Passing on a QB now would be like Baltimore passing on Flacco because they drafted Troy Smith a year earlier.
You don't pass on premiere talent because you might have David Garrard sitting on the bench. I'm not hating on Davis, and I'm not saying he isn't capable of starting, but we have to scout the next QB class and if one of them grades high enough you have to take them.
