Perhaps but the mock draft if it fell that way would be awesome. It makes me laugh when people think the NIners should use a "luxury" pick on players like Spiller or McLain. At least this mock has the Niners addressing their true needs with the first 4 picks.
The corner position is just as much as a luxury pick as half back and inside linebacker. Clements, Spencer, and Brown is not a bad secondary by any stretch. You can also find good nickel corners in free agency every single year.
I know everybody wants to cut Nate or move him to safety, but it's pretty assanine if you ask me. 6 mil next year is not a horrendous deal. Pay the man this year, and then start working on restructing his contract for the future. Nate's not dumb he knows he isn't getting that fluff money we gave him in his original contract.
Our secondary is not as bad as it looks on paper. We've played 5 games against top 9 passing offenses already this year including the 1st, the 3rd, and the 4th passing attacks. If you look at our entire schedule 8/10 opponents have been in the upper half in passing this year. Our QB rating is a more than respectable 80.3. Teams average 7.1 yards per attempt and a 61% completion ratio. That's 19th in the league. Definetily not good numbers there, but like I said the secondary isn't as bad as it's made out to be.
Tough schedule, bad pass rush, Clements injury, bad offense have all heavily contributed to our 30th pass ranking defense this season.

Yeah except first of all, getting a top flight cornerback is rarely considered a luxury since #1 cornerbacks are so hard to find. If he runs fast, he's got all the tools to be a great corner. Secondly, I only have a problem with luxury picks if the value does't match up. Haden is great value and likely would be the best player available. I'm not so sure of the same for guys like McClain or spiller. Actually, I like McClain but we cant afford to invest so much money/draft picks on our linebackers.[ Edited by dhp318 on Nov 28, 2009 at 8:32 AM ]

DHP said this very well. Corner back is a need for this team in my opinion. Clement's play declined somewhat before the injury, Brown hasnt stepped up like the Niners thought, and Spencer is just not great. Picking a guy like Haden would immediatley elevate the defense and when added with a pass rusher would make us a top 10 defense.

McClain is and would be fantastic value at that pick. Considering we run a 3-4 we can afford to have a higher premium on LB's. Spikes has 1 year left in the tank, Ulbrich is done, Wilhelm (spelling) is a band-aid, and McKillop still needs time. We are 1 major injury away for Willis (knock on wood) from having our D go limp. McClain would be able to sit behind Spikes, learn a little, then go thump heads with Willis. Also if Willis went down McClain could slide into his spot while McKillop takes his, that's intelligent planning for the future.

Clements is fine, Spencer has been very good this year, and Brown has started 2 games for us. Haden would be a great addition but expecting a kid that would most likely play nickel to elevate us to top 10 is a little ridiculous.

Spiller and McLain would be addressing "needs", especially if Spikes retires.
We NEED speed on our offense, and we need a player to address our KR/PR woes. Spiller does just that.
We'll need a TED LB alongside Patrick Willis. McLain does that, too.
We addressed both of those positions last year with Coffee and McKillop. While Im not that fond of Coffee, I believe that grabbing Scott McKillop in the 5th round was an absolute steal from a value stand point and he projects perfectly as a TED linebacker.

I agree with you here and would like to go with Haden and Hughes with picks 1a and 1b... Then try to trade back up for Mike Iupati in the late 1st or early 2nd.
Our hole at RT to should filled via FA... If we do cut Clements, that could possibly free up enough money to go after Marcus McNeil or Jahri Evans (whom I feel could move to RT since he was originally converted to RG from LT after he was drafted) if either one of them hit the market.
The point is, we still need to focus on drafting BPA and I feel that the top CB and pass rushing OLB hold more value than the top RT in the draft... Needs to be filled via FA or Trade.

As much as we do need an OT, I would be estatic if we got Haden, Hughes, and Iupati with our first 3. We would be getting the #1 CB, the #1 OG, and possibly the #1 OLB in the draft.

with a corner picked that high, he could immediately step in at nickel, with the expectation that he'd start at some point in the season when his technique has been better developed and his feel for the game has improved. Furthermore, this may be a 3-4, but we're going to need to spend more money on a pass rushing LB, we've spent money resigning Haralson, Lawson was the 22nd pick, Willis is a stud and will require a lot of money.
I also had to fix this quote clusterf**k.

We need starters on the team. We clearly need Oline help - Tackle, Guard, and a realistice Center for backup. We need pass rush, and we are going to need lots of money for V. Davis, Willis, Franklin. Then we need FS or CB as well. So lots of things can happen this offseason.
