The Christian Ponder Bandwagon

This.

There is no doubt Ponder will hit his ceiling in the NFL much quicker than Locker will

I think the scout-speak would be something like: Locker has the higher ceiling but Ponder has the higher floor.

But will Locker ever hit his ceiling at all?

Talking about guys who might fall. I could easily see Locker being that guy who falls into the second round. Too many question marks. He probably doesn't get to us. But he probably gets snatched up by Buffalo or Arizona.

Agreed.

Someone is bound to fall. A poor pro-day/combine will be the "nail in the coffin" for Locker.

1) Have injury history on their THROWING arm
2) When scouts say "strong enough"
3) Have injury history with concussions
4) Come from Florida State

I don't get why people use the argument "Don't draft a qb who comes from so and so school" Thats the most idiotic argument one can have. Ponder played in a completely different system then any QB at FSU prior to him. Thank God we didn't draft every QB that came from Notre Dame or BYU...

Ponder had 1 concussion. Stop the presses...

There is a knock on every single QB coming out. Rather it's accuracy issues, pocket issues, arm strength issues. I'm glad Bill Walsh took a chance with Montana.

They used to say that about Cal QBs, until Aaron Rodgers came along.

He's smart. Finance degree in 2-1/2 years with the 3.7 GPA
His arm is strong enough to make every NFL throw
He's mobile
He's a leader
He's got the QB moxie
He's accurate..
He can take something off his passes when need be
He can make those touch passes and drop it right in the bread basket
He can drop a passes right over defenders into his wr hands
When he scrambles, his eyes stay down-field

Prime example in the Senior Bowl, I'll give you 2..

#1. He had a short slant pass that he threw right on the money that also kept his wr out of harms way. They made a point to compare that to Jake Locker's slant passes that went high and left his wr out to dry....

#2. His last TD pass.. The wr ran a medium post to the end-zone.. Ponder threw a touch pass and put it right on the wr's face mask, it wasn't even necessary for the receiver to jump... But what I liked most about that pass, is when Ponder dropped back to pass he looked to his left and drew the safety over and then came back to the right... The small things like that are HUGE!!!

Put this guy into Harbaugh's hands.. Could be something special!

Durability is my only issue with Ponder..

Von Miller/Other Pass Rusher in the 1st and Ponder in the 2nd, I would be psyched!

But at the end of the day... Whoever Harbaugh decides on is fine with me.. He's the QB Guru, not myself or anyone of us...

I don't like to put too much stock into that senior bowl performance because their was no blitzing or press coverage.

I'd also like to add that before the 2010 NCAA season began, many "experts" had Christian Ponder rated as a 1st round draft pick. Obviously the kid has talent.

I just saw some videos of Ponder and read some scouting reports on him, and I can say that I would like to have him in the 2nd.

I saw the highlights and for the most part saw a bunch of floater balls. Accurate but he'll get a lot of picks because there isn't enough velocity on those throws. Yes the WCO doesn't need a rocket arm and needs accuracy as envisioned by Walsh - but the league has evolved and the WCO has evolved. Simply, I think QBs generally speaking need a little stronger arm to play then when Walsh conceived the WCO. That being said, I don't think this guy has an NFL arm. I could be totally wrong and willing to eat it, but from what I've seen - those passes will get picked more times than not.

Post which highlights you saw. That's the antithesis of what is saw the last two years from Ponder. Quick release and velocity on the throws (due to his footwork/mechanics), in addition to pocket presence and accuracy, are his strong suits. Maybe on super deep throws he floats them up there but on anything else it's quite the opposite.

Maybe you saw some throws where he was playing with the busted elbow?

And most importantly...

Christian Ponder, Florida State. He's smart and he played in a demanding offensive system for the Seminoles. He doesn't have the arm strength of Ryan Mallett or the athleticism of Cam Newton, but he has just enough of each. He also has a long injury history and suffered a concussion that knocked him out of FSU's bowl game.
Said Rang: "He's a high GPA guy and understands offense. Because of that, he might be a good fit."

There was just Jeremy Beall getting 2 second headstarts on all those offsides, lol.

I continue to maintain that at least factoring in the history that a school has had in producing pro-style QBs. Saying that this factor is idiotic, is an uninformed statement. As a matter of fact - saying that anyones "opinon" in idiotic often just calls into question the validity of the critics motives.

Had Ponder lit the world on fire his Senior year and his only knock was that he comes from the barren wasteland of FSU quarterbacks, then it wouldn't be such a factor.

FSU QB + Concussion + (most importantly) throwing arm issues = dangerous prospect not worth more than a 4th round pick.
