Christian Ponder has a change of plans

In late January, former Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder said that he doesn’t plan to throw at the Scouting Combine.

“I think the plan right now is I’m not going to throw, which most quarterbacks do,” Ponder said in the days prior to the Senior Bowl, per BuffaloBills.com. “Something could change and I could throw, but I will do everything else.”

Something has indeed changed.

Despite being named the MVP of the Senior Bowl, we’re told that Ponder has indeed decided to throw at the Scouting Combine.

He joins guys like Cam Newton, Colin Kaepernick, Jake Locker, Ryan Mallett, Andy Dalton, and Ricky Stanzi, all of whom will throw at the Scouting Combine, as Silva summarized earlier today.

Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert is the biggest name to choose not to throw.

Looks like we'll get to see him air out the 7 and 9 routes and thus proving all the "arm strength" haters wrong.

Meanwhile, Blaine Gabbert doesn't want to embarrass himself any further.

Gabbert is universally regarded as the better prospect and is thus not throwing as he has nowhere to go but down by doing so. Ponder, in Gabbert's position, would be doing the same.

NFL teams poke and prod Florida State’s Ponder

Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder underwent at least three surgeries on his right (throwing) arm over the course of his final two years in college. A bursa sac in his elbow repeatedly burst late in the 2010 season, and he was unable to finish the Seminoles’ Chick-fil-A Bowl game against South Carolina.

NFL teams are taking Ponder’s injuries seriously.

According to Rich Campbell of the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star, Ponder revealed at the Scouting Combine Friday that he spent three hours under an MRI machine in Indianapolis.

Ponder, who also separated his throwing shoulder on a tackle attempt as a junior, left Florida State with a 22-12 record, 61.8 completion rate, and 49:30 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He was also the MVP of the Senior Bowl game.

Ponder is projected as a second-day pick in a deep class for quarterbacks.

CHRISTIAN PONDER, FLORIDA STATE

Everyone wants to align themselves with a winner — especially the quarterbacks at the NFL Combine.

Asked about what NFL quarterback they try to emulate, Washington’s Jake Locker, TCU’s Andy Dalton and Ponder have said – surprise! – Super-Bowl-champion signal-caller Aaron Rodgers.

The energetic Ponder, a possible second-round pick, smiled after mentioning Rodgers, “Obviously … Super Bowl quarterback. He’s a good person to compare myself to. But just how athletic is he is, the way he can move in and out of the pocket, buy time with his feet and he’s extremely accurate and we’re also the same size. So I definitely like to compare myself to him. ”

After an injury marred senior season, which came on the heels of a separated shoulder as a junior, Ponder earned high marks at the Senior Bowl where he was named the game’s MVP. And his combine is also off to a good start. Ponder said he’s spent “three hours in an MRI machine” Thursday and his various ailments (shoulder, forearm, triceps) checked out fine.

Ponder has been described as a good fit in a West Coast Offense based on his accuracy, intelligence and mobility. He also realizes he still has plenty to prove after his completion percentage this past season dipped to 61.5 percent (it was 68.8 as a junior).

“I think it’s kind of hard to base what I did off my senior year,” Ponder said. “That’s what this whole process is for. To clear everything up and prove the passer that I really am.”

Or he's afraid to get "knee-to-knee, eyeball-to-eyeball" with his competition and show that he's the best. Calvin Johnson never had a thing to prove. But at the combine he borrowed someone else's cleats and ran a 4.35 because he knew he could. Gabbert has something to hide. Or he just doesn't aspire to compete amongst his peers. Tells me a lot about his mental makeup. Or lack there of.
I am interested in Christian Ponder should be go to 49ers!!

I agree. Couldn't have said it better myself.
He's the QB I want the most in this draft. Any word about him or any of the other QBs from the combine?

Ponder had a 3 hour MRI on his shoulder and elbow. He checked out 100% healthy.

Ponder is going to throw with all of the other qb's except McElroy (injury) and Gabbert (lacks a competitive fire/talent/both).

Mayock gave Ponder a 2nd round grade along with Stanzi, Kaepernick, and Dalton.

He's growing his hair out.
