The Christian Ponder Bandwagon

He was a rd 4 or rd 3 guy and now I don't think he will make it out of rd 2. The other day I counted around 10 teams that maybe looking for a QB. If we don't get him in rd 2 all those 10 teams will pick before we get to pick in rd 3.

Who do you want in the 1st.........Newton, Gabbert?

If Harbaugh chose one of those two in the first I'd be pretty psyched about it, but I don't have a favorite right now.

In Harbaugh I Trust, I just hope it's not Newton. Ponder just seems like the perfect fit to me here.

Carolina, Buffalo, Cincinatti, Seattle, Arizona, Tennessee, Miami, Washington, Minnesota, San Francisco

I bet we see a run on qbs in the second round, after Newton and Gabbert I wonder who will be the next qb to go.

The most important thing is that if Ponder is our guy (and I hope he is) we don't p***y foot around and hope to get him. We go get him and to hell with the rest.

This franchise has stalled for many years because we have not got what we require from the QB. We cannot risk another false start.

I'm confident baalke would move back into the first to get ponder. Sort of like tebow last year.

Baalke showed with Davis he's not just going to settle for another player at the position he likes less.
I think seven of those other nine teams draft ahead of us in the 2nd round. It is theoretically possible that 9 QBs could be picked by the time we get to our 2nd round pick (45th overall). Thus, if Harbaugh wants a particular QB from this group, and 7th is too high for him, we might have to trade up into the bottom of the 1st round.
Like i've said for weeks, we're going to have to trade up into the FIRST round to get Ponder.

Hopefully after watching the combine the rest of the board realizes that when healthy, he is the best quarterback in this draft class. There are too many teams that draft ahead of us in the 2nd round that need qb's.

Note, if we do in fact plan to trade into round number 1, it will have to be AHEAD of Seattle at pick number 25. The most likely spot to do so would be NE at pick 17. I wouldn't be shocked at all if Min picked Ponder at 12.
Before I say something which I have been opining on for a long time now, I refer back to something that will lend more credibility to my thinking on this.

Mayock said something on point last week on the NFLN. Billick had just said that Gabbert was a first round franchise talent, but taking him in the top five was way too early.

Maycock said that if you rate a QB as franchise caliber (and Billick was saying that Gabbert was) and your team needa QB, why wouldn't you take him in the top five. Exactly!

Why p***y foot around playing Russian roulette with your team's future; gambling that your QB will fall to a lower round. If you haven't yet realised that QB, more than any other position, will make or break your team, you shouldn't even be in the discussion. We as Niners fans surely must realise that. The Niners actually have no real idea on how good their roster is because of poor play out of the QB position. They've just been treading water for the past six years. Waiting.

Not saying that Ponder is the guy. But if the Niners think he has franchise potential, they have to be pro active in getting him. And if he is the ONLY one they believe has franchise potential, they should pick him at the first opportunity, even if it is #7. If there are several who they think have franchise potential, then they can afford to wait. But they have to have all the elements in place to move up (or down) to get the franchise guy as soon as there is only one remaining on the board.

In another post where it was suggested: Ponder in the second, I speculated that he would not be there when we picked in the second. Now, after his combine, and the hype he is getting, he is no longer going to be flying under the radar. He's probably a late first rounder at the latest. The Niners have to be prepared for that scenario and make their move.

I didn't get to read your post before my last post, but what about Stanzi?

In your assessment has he clearly fallen off the radar vis-a-vis Ponder? Or is he still a viable alternative with equivalent potential?

Totally agree.

It's almost like what the Jets did with Sanchez and what Tampa did w/ Freeman.

Each team knew the guy they wanted and weren't willing to sit back and hope he falls, which they most certainly could have. Sure it was considered too high at the time for each pick, but i'm sure each of those franchises (especially Tampa) is very thankful they chose the qb they wanted as soon as they could afford to do so.

I thought Stanzi was excellent today. I know Bunting was down on him for not completing the passes, but Stanzi didn't care about completing the passes. He threw to a spot, like he's supposed to do. If the wr's not there, thats on them, not the qb. Mayock was quick to point that out over and over again. I thought Stanzi's mechanics and timing were the best of the crop today. To me, he's so reminiscent of Tom Brady in that regard. I thought Ponder did everything perfect today and showed off more athleticism than Stanzi.

I've had Stanzi number 1 and Ponder number 2 on my board for quite some time.

I think w/ Ponder being 100% medically, he has to be considered number 1 on my board.

I'll let it all set in over the next couple days and have a new Swagg ranking by mid week.
well Baalke moved up 2 or 3 spot to get Anthony Davis so if Harbaugh likes Ponder then I could def see us move up to draft him

Agreed. This decision is vital to our franchise.

Yeah . . . I know that. But how close they are to each other is critical.

If the Niners are reading it as you are and feel that they are close in potential, they may not have to trade up, they can wait for one to fall to them. However, I don't necessarily see that scenario playing out.

I feel they are almost interchangeable at this stage in the game. I suppose maybe it might come down to who impresses me more in the film room. From what i understand, both are gym rats that LOVE to watch film and break down scenarios.

So while you might be right that if 49ers feel they are that close in potential, they may not have to trade up. But what if other teams feel the same way? You just never know. I do not envy the task for Baalke if he has to choose between Ponder and Stanzi.
