The Christian Ponder Bandwagon

I like Ponder as much as the next guy, but I'm not going to slit my wrist if we don't get him and I'm definitely not taking him at #7...I would consider trading back in to the top of the first, so long as it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg. Again, I like Ponder and had him as my QB pick (2nd or 3rd round...can't remember) in the first mock I did back in early January. But I don't think he's going to make or break this organization...so a little perspective is warranted here.

If you don't think he's gonna "make" this organization then i'm surprised you'd even want him in the first 3 rounds.

I would hope he would, just like every player we'd draft. I hope the best for all of them, but I'm going to get the best value for them as I can, and I don't believe Ponder is great value at #7. He might end up being that, and I pray that he is...but I don't have as much faith in that projection as you do...clearly. So like any investment, I "buy" at the price I think is fair. You obviously believe otherwise...I hope you're right. Where we disagree on Ponder is the price.
Wow. I have been one of the biggest Ponder-honks in this thread, but oh my God we better not draft him at #7.

7 San Francisco (6-10)
8 Tennessee (6-10) Needs QB

Yah, people here can get a little carried away at times. But it's understandable given how badly we've needed a top-light QB around here, and Ponder is definitely an excellent prospect for a WC offense.

Can you link me to anything? Not trying to be a smart a##, I really would like to read something from a respected analyst/journalist/draft expert who listed Ponder as a first round talent before his injuries.

But, the fact still remains; Ponder is not as good as the top 7 players listed on most draft "experts" big board.

So, if you are the GM of an NFL team. Are you willing to bet your job on Ponder being a HOMERUN? You better hope so, because if he is not Sam Bradford, Matt Ryan, or even Mark Sanchez, you can pack your bags.

Swag has directed you to some sources. I can't, but I pretty much recall that Locker was in the "first overall" talk. Not so much this year. So you can never tell.

It is also difficult to equate/compare talent and "good"-ness at widely dissimilar positions. I go with mayocks reasoning. QB is the most important position on the team. If you don't have one and you identify a franchise prospect, you get him at ANY spot. Not saying that Ponder is that guy, but the Niners have to decide.

Thats why i've ranked Stanzi and Ponder at the top of my rankings all this time. I feel they are the best at their position. If qb is the most important position in the nfl, which it is, then why would i not have them at the very top?

Again, not saying we should or would draft Ponder at number 7, but if we did, i know why we did and im 100% ok with it.

Good to see we're on the same wavelength with this school of thought, Rsrkshn.

I'm feeling the need!

There's always an initial wave of excitement at a new discovery, which it has been for the media types (although not for you and others). Now we wait for that to abate a little. MD speculates that there MAY be something in Ponder's MRI report; probably that will leak out IF it is indeed the case.

I did not see the idividual QB workouts unfortunately, but both MM and Bunting panned Stanzi, which was surprising. Not so much MM, but I pay more attention to Bunting. I like Stanzi too, and Mayock (I like) still thinks highly of him,. So, if he gets bad press and stays under the radar, that's a good thing. He may be the fallback if perchance Ponder is unreachable. Or Stanzi may be higher on the Niners wish list. Who knows?

I'll look forward to your revised wish list . . . along with the others.
i'm sure he will be there for us in the second. or we trade our pick to stockpile some more picks, but if there's a lockout i don't see any draft day trades
Its just a matter of time, folks.

Ya idk what the heck Bunting was looking at yesterday when it comes to the QB's. I mean he even said Mallett looked bad when in reality he was dominating the passing drills and many many other media outlets agreed that Mallet was sensational.

As far as Matt Maiocco...he's a know nothing. His opinion is like morning breath, everyone has it, but nobody wants it.
We will have to move up in the second round to get Ponder. I hope we do.
That lame duck bomb he threw to Hankerson = pass

Ugly pass, but keep in mind there is absolutely no chemistry between senior bowl players having never played together and being thrown into a game together after a week. You gotta give him that benefit of the doubt. But yeah, no denying that pass was ugly.

And if he is the ONLY one they believe has franchise potential, they should pick him at the first opportunity, even if it is #7. If there are several who they think have franchise potential, then they can afford to wait. But they have to have all the elements in place to move up (or down) to get the franchise guy as soon as there is only one remaining on the board.

It definitely was suggested here and at least 1 other place that we should take him at 7 if we believe he's the guy.

While Ponder is my favorite option at QB, there is still such a thing as draft value and I don't think he should be valued that high when there will be much safer bets available and he's highly unlikely to be picked in the next 10 picks. Way over drafting him just because he's "our guy" is what the Bills tend to do, and I always wince when they make those terrible picks.
