Branch is also still dangerous enough that he takes pressure off the TE's and opens up the underneath routes, I just don't see how you could disagree. But with as deep as NE is at the TE position, not even they run two or three TE's constantly in between the 20's. NE's second TE doesn't even have 200 yards receiving with only 2 TD's, and as pass-happy NE what makes anyone think Fleener would have just as much or more with our balanced attack?? Now I could see if we were running a Coryell or smiliar to Norv Turner's offense, utilizing a lot of two-TE sets with heavy play-action down field passing, but we're not, which is even more of a reason NOT to draft another TE in the 1st round. NOW, if Fleener falls to us in the 2nd than by all means pull the damn trigger, but as it stands we're better off adding another DE/LB, CB, DE, OG or WR in the 1st round.

IF they are capable of stretching the field, they don't actually do it. They both do their damage with under neath routes: mostly slants, crosses, outs, shake-outs, shake-ins, and drags. The Superbowl was the first time I saw Welker run an even marginally-deep (MAYBE 20yds) route in a while, and Brady was so surprised that he missed him, no matter what his bag-of-bones wife has to say. Like I said, Branch runs good, crafty routes, but he's definitely not pulling safety help off of the TEs. ever. I think your statement about the #2 tight end has been covered adequately. I think you are trying so hard to make a point that you lost touch with the facts for a moment. The team and players you are describing do not match-up with what I see on the field. I could be crazy, but I don't think so (would I know if I WAS? )

I don't feel I lost touch of the point I'm trying to make just really forming an opinion on why I rather go in a different direction than Fleener in the 1st.

re: Bold - So I guess you watch more Patriots football than the 9ers I take it?? I mean you must have since you know every game that's all the routes they run.

I agree with Kalohe on this one we have other needs and Mayock didn't even give a first round grade to Fleener he's one dimensional blocking is his weakness according to him. We need a Deep threat WR would trade the pick for Mike Wallace quick!

Yeah lets draft a big slow TE at 30 instead of a pass rusher Id rather wait and get another fast WR/TE in the 2nd or 3rd then waste a 1st rd pick on a slow TE. The last thing this offense needs is a big slow TE and the defense just needs another pass rusher at OLB/DE to be elite.

How do you know Fleener is slow. Truth be told he's probably not much slower than your man Jeffery, but a heck of a lot bigger and not fat.

Assuming we resign Brooks our pass rush is fine though. I'm not sure if you missed this season but that Aldon Smith guy is pretty good.

We already have the best front 7 in football and our defense is elite. We have to go offense whether that be Fleener, g/c or receiver.

Granted we could lose Rodgers, Goldson or Brooks and things could change.

jeffery is bigger

fleener may have 2 inches on him but alshon will have the best verticle this draft class

I wonder who's got the best vertical though?

This offense doesnt need to get slower. It needs to get faster by a whole lot in order to improve from last season. Fleener wont be much help playing second fiddle to Vernon. With 85 theres no need for another 1st rd TE not when you a pass rushing OLB short of elite on defense.

Truth be told you already know Jeffery is alot faster than Fleener. More production, better hands, bigger threat and a position of need. As far as size Fleener isnt much bigger and probably has the same man titties or chicken chest. He like Jeffery doesnt go to a juiced up Balco program like a NCState or USC Trojans or Georgia

Now if Dwayne Allen is sitting there at 30 id hope they pair his speed with Davis' at TE. Thats a mismatch all over the field and better suited to our needs. Instead of a big slow TE with ankle issues who wont have a QB like Luck throwing him open

Ahh this time of the year, everyone falls in love with a pick and defends him to the death, oh how I love draft time.

To the Coby Fleener fans I bow out of this one, don''t wanna be glued to one thread.

Do we REALLY want to take a TE in the 1st round when we already have an elite TE and a good 2nd string TE

If theres either Ruben Randle or Coby Fleener there, do you guys really want to take the TE? Honestly I think Randle will be a beast and I dont see why we'd go with TE. I know all these huge great TEs like Jimmy Graham and the Gronk and Hernandez double threat in New England but we got VD and Delanie

not to mention saints have a colston and patriots have a welker

we need a #1 WR before we get a #2 TE/#3 TE

Exactly. We don't even have a #1 receiver and people want to draft a no.2 TE when we already have an elite TE
I dont get it lol

No need to get nasty, dude. I got Sunday Ticket, so I watch a lot of games, and I record the ones I'm not watching. I don't like to watch college football, either. The Patriots are interesting on offense, so I watch more of their games, though I usually root against them. There's a lot of good football to watch, but I watch each 49er game twice
