For the time being we're set at tight end so I'm taking that high pick and applying it elsewhere.

How are we set at TE? Delanie Walker is a free agent and there are no guarantees the Niners are going to resign him.
Byham also probably covers the main thing I'd miss about Walker- his blocking abilities. I'd love someone like Fleener as a better pass catching/size mismatch, then Byham or walker as mainly a blocker.

Harbaugh loves tight ends, there's no way we're "set" at that position especially with the success New England has been having with two great playmaking TEs. I do think WR is a bigger issue than tight end, but there's no reason we can't address both very early.

Could you imagine a team like the Saints trying to defend Vernon Davis and then the 49ers having their own Gronkowski running wild in the middle of the field? There's quite a few teams that can handle one very good TE, two of them? Not so much.
Can't get Fleener in the 2nd First rounder

Nothing is ever set in stone. We haven't even had the combine yet. Remember prince amukamara the so called top 10 pick? Just an example.

If they happened to use the first round pick on Fleener......I would not be upset, to me that would be a sign that Harbaugh has tremendous confidence in the guy and fully believes that he can hit the field running and be a valuable addition to the offense. As much as people are focused on WR's, this team's biggest problem was making plays on 3rd down, in the red zone and especially...in the middle of the field, Fleener would help all of those so I couldn't give one s**t less if he happens to be a TE.

Except the Giants desperately need at TE and they will be drafting right after the Niners or a pick later. They will be looking at all the top TE's very closely. Also, since all these teams are having such great success with TE's recently, especially shown with New England, I can see more teams looking hard at top TE's, even if they already have one good one.

True, they have ballard but I'm sure superbowl weekend they'll wish they had at least one more. Is fleener the consensus top TE? I haven't followed the TE prospects much this year.

I doubt Fleener goes in the 1st unless someone reaches, he's more likely to get picked in the second or third I don't see the problem drafting him there, with all due respect to DW Fleener would be more of a threat than him because of his size as well as being more familiar with the offense. Walker is good and all but he's not someone I see as a threat to take it to the end zone each time like Vernon or Gronk, whereas Fleener is more likely to become that type of tight end.

i think he is the #3 TE. He might be gone before our 2nd rd pick but thats y i think we will trade back into the second to pick up fleener with the first 2nd and a WR like Quick or Streeter with our second 2nd. Then we can address our defensive needs like CB and OLB with ur two 3rd rounders (that is thinking that we gain another 3rd from trading out of the 1st rd)
How many Stanford players did we draft last year?

We have bigger issues. Wr, OG, and CB are glaring needs than a back up or double TE set.

Once again, in the overall scheme of things, what's the difference between acquiring a WR or a TE if the TE is physically imposing and results in higher success in the end-zone. Anytime you can afford to create a mismatch that other teams will struggle with, you do it. Like the Rams when they drafted Torry Holt in spite of having Bruce. If Fleener were drafted, it would be to play a lot of snaps and really open up the middle of the field and help improve both red-zone and 3rd percentages.

unfortunately we didn't draft a single stanford player which ended up hurting us because doug baldwin and richard sherman ended up with our division rivals. and those two guys look like they might be studs for the next few years.

i no longer doubt stanford players andi trust harbaugh and baalke's talent evaluation so if we ended up drafting fleener then i would be more than happy.
I expect TEs like Fleener to get drafted earlier than normal this year.

Think about how many TEs were just killing it in the playoffs this year. Graham, Davis, Gronk, Hernandez. TEs are becoming a bigger part of the offensive game in the NFL. And big pass catching TEs like Fleener will be VERY popular on draft day this year.

Yep, like I said, if the 49ers took him with their 1st round pick, I wouldn't even be upset. Most teams are going to struggle to cover these big, play-maker TE's, eventually defenses will catch up but if you can have an advantage like that, why not use it? Fleener and Vernon Davis on the field at the same time? That's more explosive than any receiver you can find in the draft to pair with Crabtree. I was skeptical but as I saw teams struggle to cover tight-ends, namely the Saints and the Giants, if you have further enhance that advantage and make life even more miserable for other teams defensively....do it.
