I have mixed feelings about Devin Smith (I'm an Ohio State fan) but some of the other receivers coveted by the zone above him make me lol. Specifically Sammie Coates and Jalen Strong.
The biggest skeptics of Smith are Ohio State fans. We have seen him play four years and know that he is strictly a vertical threat and nothing more. He is great at the long ball, but there is a reason he was playing behind Thomas and Marshall for chunks of the year. Can't believe some project him as a first or second rounder. Crazy!!!!
Fellow OSU fan here, and I agree... to a point. Devin Smith has always been a solid if not great blocker and has caught the long ball with more and more frequency. This past season was a perfect storm for a guy like him. He showed off his greatest asset on the biggest stage. Because of that, he will definitely go higher than was expected all year. Here are a few thoughts:
1. Is there a QB more like Kaepernick in college football than Cardale Jones? Big, athletic, gigantic arm, questionable accuracy and ability to read defenses. Devin Smith seemed to blossom with Jones because Jones loved to heave it up there and let him go get it. I think that's why we brought Lloyd in here. We wanted a Go-Get-It guy for Kaep.
2. Smith adjusts to the ball in the air better than any college receiver and better than any 49er receiver. His body control and instincts will translate to the NFL.
3. Smith is a willing and capable blocker. Look at every Elliot run. Smith is right there making a block. His toughness and dedication to his team were noted numerous times by teammates and coaches. Urban Meyer even got a little choked up talking about him.
4. However, Smith does not have the small space quickness to be an effective receiver inside the hash marks. When he was targeted on slants or screens, his hands were fine, but he showed almost no ability to break tackles or cut back into space for YAC.
Ultimately, teams have to decide if this year was Smith's coming out party or if he was just a product of good fortune and perfect opportunity.
