You mind sharing what those mixed feelings are?

Well, he did one thing in college... go deep. And he was the best at going deep in college football. But why did he ONLY go deep? Was it because he was the best at it, so the coaching staff kept having him do that? Or was it because he couldn't do anything else?

The ball was spread to a lot of receivers at OSU, so its hard to predict how any of them will translate to the NFL being expected to be "the guy".

Those are fair questions to ask. But the one thing he does the best is without a doubt the one thing we need the most especially with Vernon Davis on the decline.

Can't disagree there.

I won't hate if we draft him, but there are other WRs I'd rather have.

The biggest skeptics of Smith are Ohio State fans. We have seen him play four years and know that he is strictly a vertical threat and nothing more. He is great at the long ball, but there is a reason he was playing behind Thomas and Marshall for chunks of the year. Can't believe some project him as a first or second rounder. Crazy!!!!

Fellow OSU fan here, and I agree... to a point. Devin Smith has always been a solid if not great blocker and has caught the long ball with more and more frequency. This past season was a perfect storm for a guy like him. He showed off his greatest asset on the biggest stage. Because of that, he will definitely go higher than was expected all year. Here are a few thoughts:

1. Is there a QB more like Kaepernick in college football than Cardale Jones? Big, athletic, gigantic arm, questionable accuracy and ability to read defenses. Devin Smith seemed to blossom with Jones because Jones loved to heave it up there and let him go get it. I think that's why we brought Lloyd in here. We wanted a Go-Get-It guy for Kaep.

2. Smith adjusts to the ball in the air better than any college receiver and better than any 49er receiver. His body control and instincts will translate to the NFL.

3. Smith is a willing and capable blocker. Look at every Elliot run. Smith is right there making a block. His toughness and dedication to his team were noted numerous times by teammates and coaches. Urban Meyer even got a little choked up talking about him.

4. However, Smith does not have the small space quickness to be an effective receiver inside the hash marks. When he was targeted on slants or screens, his hands were fine, but he showed almost no ability to break tackles or cut back into space for YAC.

Ultimately, teams have to decide if this year was Smith's coming out party or if he was just a product of good fortune and perfect opportunity.

the 411 is that no one says "what's the 411?"

I miss the 90's

I doubt 9 WR's are gone by our pick in round 2. I feel like at least one of Strong, Coates, Funchess, Smith, and Dorsett will be there at 46. Jamison Crowder is another speedster to look at in rounds 2-3.

This is the time of year when certain players get substantially overrated. Guys that people consider to be "2nd round locks" could very well end up falling into the 3rd round and beyond, even with a good combine performance. The only WR's that I look at as absolute 1st rounder material are Cooper, White and Parker.

If you could draft BPA at 15 and then maneuver in rounds 2-3 to land Smith and DGB ...

As a 49er fan, I get that. In EVERY other context though, NO!

Sounds exactly like the type of WR we need. Someone who can stretch the field, adjust to the ball in mid air and can block. And it would not reuire a 1st round pick to get him.
Didn't realize there were so many tOSU fans here. If so I would have started a tOSU thread in Other Sports

+1 he really is the type WR need.
In addition to his 40 speed, Ohio State WR Devin Smith "has the lower body explosion that will test well with the vertical and broad jump tests," noted CBS Sports' Dane Brugler.

"He was the state of Ohio's long jump champ out of high school, also running a 10.56 100-meter dash," Brugler wrote. Smith has the type of wheels that make evaluators salivate. He plays like DeSean Jackson, according to NFL Media draft analyst Lance Zierlein. Both Mel Kiper and Todd McShay currently have Smith slotted into Round 1 in their mock drafts.

Isn't that what Desean Jackson does? Not trying to be a smart ass. How do the two compare?

That`s what I`m been saying,I would not draft Smith @ 15, I would rather Draft Coates @ 15 at least He does run more of the route tree and He is just as fast and bigger.
