When Jones became the QB he helped Smith with his big arm. yeah he is a bigger version of Djax in my opinion and can block as well. I don't think he did returns last year, but he was one of the best gunners in college...so he could fill that role as well.

I would just like to see some serious, scary speed on the outside that defensive backfields absolutely have to account for if they don't want to get burned repeatedly. It doesn't matter where Djax lines up - he scares DB's. They play way off of him every time I see him in a game.

Yup we haven't had that since Moss and even if he doesn't catch 80 balls a year, teams would have to game plan for him and he'd command safety help... Spread out that field and get rid of the constant 8 man boxes

We had Ted Ginn.

Yes, people keep saying that as if it's relevant. That was then. This is now.

if you think this kid is Ted Ginn...they are fast and from Ohio St that's about it. Smith is bigger, actually goes up and gets the ball, is great at tracking the ball and making adjustments, doesn't avoid contact, and can block.....Ginn literally doesn't do any of that.

I didn't see Ginn make any catches like this...yes I know I posted this video in another thread but I don't care

I think to be fair, you need to compare Ginn at Ohio State.

People would have soggy drawers if Ginn was coming out in the draft this year.

He was electric in college no doubt! It's hard to find speed like that, but all I saw was a great return man (which he was in the NFL) and nothing special as a WR. Smith is more aggressive, bigger, grabs balls at their high point over other CBs, doesn't avoid contact, blocks, and is great at tracking the ball and making adjustments. I never saw Ginn do that in college or the pros.

Just because Ginn didn't develop doesn't mean Smith won't. I mean who were his QBs in Miami? I think they went 1-15 his rookie year lol. I'm not saying he should be the pick at 15 (would love a trade down) but he would be a perfect fit for Kap and would open things underneath for all of our possession receivers.

Agreed. Devin Smith is probably what NFL teams were hoping Ted could become. Ginn just happened to suck at the things Smith is good at.. that being tracking the ball deep and having excellent body control to adjust with the deep speed he has.
Perriman has some TO in him but too raw with inconsistent hands to go first round IMO.
Mel Kiper has Breshad Perriman going No. 15 overall to the 49ers.

That guy's been off for a while...
Even then, I had no idea what people saw on Ginn Jr.. at Ohio State, or even at the combine...

I wish I can recall the days of the original 49ers MOUTH OF SOUTH FORUM... I was telling everyone that Tedd Ginn Jr will either be a Willie Gault in the NFL, or just another Desmond Howard type of player...

He was not a WR..

Definitely has some TO in him

This team does not need a WR high. If Krap can't get it done with the current WRs and TE he just can't get it done. Then we need a new QB.

Baalke is terrible at picking WRs and he will pick the wrong one anyway.

We just lost McDonald and we may lose Justin Smith too. D line is a huge need. We may lose Frank Gore. RB is a big need. We could use more speed there. We may lose Iupati. Making O line a big need.

This team has much bigger needs than WR.

First off, I want to note that I likely won't respond to any rebuttal you provide due to the fact you feel the need to act like a 12 year old and call our QB "Krap", so if I don't respond again, you know why.

Secondly, we have NO #1 receiver and nobody with speed to stretch the defense. We also have no deep threat (notice how I am not implying speed is required to be a deep threat - we simply don't have a deep threat of any kind). Kap was a very good deep passer until last year when the entire offense looked like a Pop Warner squad. Basically, we have nobody to help him utilize his strengths. We've drafted a bunch of later round project WRs, but nobody with 1st round talent (that includes AJ Jenkins as he had no business being taken in the 1st).

Baalke has swung and missed one time on a WR in the 1st. Getting a guy that everyone is high on (there are reasons for that) would be completely different from the mistake he made with Jenkins, whom NOBODY thought was a top prospect.

We need to get away from these average sized possession Recievers with below average speed (Boldin, Crabtree and Stevie are basically the same guy although Crabtree is a crappy, half-assed version of the other two).

You say we have other needs, which is true of every team including the Niners, but a #1 WR has been a need since 2003 and we STILL haven't filled it. Boldin is technically our #1, but by the time we got him, he was a very good #2 caliber guy, not a #1.

We DO need to address DL, but isn't that what Tank and Dial were drafted for? How do you know they won't take big steps forward? You think we need to draft a RB as well. What about Carlos Hyde? Have you already decided he sucks? As for replacing Iupati, it is much easier to replace a guard than a playmaking WR. I believe that has been discussed in depth already in the threads and polls about keeping Iupati or Crabtree.

Bottom line, we have other needs, but that doesn't mean WR should be ignored just because other holes are developing. A true #1 WR is a hole that has been on this roster for more than a decade. Please note this is not an argument in favor of drafting Perriman in the 1st, just an argument against the thought of us not needing to take a shot on a WR high in the draft.

Interesting write-up on Perriman

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/nfp-prospect-focus-breshad-perriman/

Some excerpts:

" If any receiver is similar in size, athleticism, and overall receiving traits to Dallas' Dez Bryant it's Perriman."

"Perriman has excellent size. I would think that he will measure in the 6027 – 215 area at the combine. He has a thick, muscular build with long arms and big hands."

"While I doubt Perriman is a burner, he is fast enough. He will most likely run in the mid to upper 4.4's this week at Indianapolis."

"He has excellent hands and will consistently make the difficult catch. In saying that, he also has some concentration lapses and will drop some catchable balls."

" I see him being drafted in the middle part of the first round, and he will play and contribute as a rookie."

Very exact guess on the height.

Like that he thought Perriman could contribute as a rookie, he thought Deandre Smelter would take until year 3. So this guy wasn't just sugarcoating rookie projections.
Sounds more and more like he is a late 1st rounder.
