QB Carson Wentz NDSU 6'5 225 Lbs

Saw an interview that Joe Fann had with TB. Baalke seems to have some connection with NDSU. Was he a coach there??

Yes DL coach
I watched a ton of Goff and a majority of the drops were on the WRs

NFL.com:
The scoop: "They've put out a lot of good football players for a small, lower-level play; that conference has. Certainly there's a learning curve they all go through, but I don't think it's as drastic as some may (think). They play at a high level. They won five national championships in a row, and Carson was a part of four of those. He's a good football player. He's got the stature you're looking for. He's got the intelligence you're looking for. There are so many positives to draw from. Now, how ready is he going to be when he gets to the league? I think there will be a learning curve, but there is for everybody at that position." -- 49ers GM Trent Baalke on North Dakota State's Carson Wentz going from the FBS to the NFL.

The skinny: The 49ers have the No. 7 pick in the draft but appear committed to bringing back Colin Kaepernick for at least another year and seeing if Chip Kelly can resurrect the QB's career. Interestingly, Baalke was a graduate assistant and defensive line coach at NDSU in 1989. If Wentz were to somehow fall to the 49ers, it would be an interesting call for Baalke, whose team has needs everywhere.

North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz measured 6-foot-5 1/4 and 237 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Wentz also measured in with 10-inch hands, dwarfing the carnie-sized 9-inch mitts of Jared Goff and Christian Hackenberg. (We kid, sorta.) Speaking at the Combine on Wednesday, new Browns coach Hue Jackson didn't hide his affinity for big-bodied quarterbacks with big hands. More so than Goff, Wentz fits Jackson's description. Both should be in play for Cleveland at No. 2 overall.

Carson Wentz Scouts Inc Profile

Mental Makeup-2-Wentz is experienced conducting a pro-style system. Height and good stature enable him to scan the entire field from inside the pocket. He clearly puts in the time and understands situational football. Shows quality awareness against the blitz and executes hot reads/site adjustments well. There's no questioning his physical or mental toughness, either. He frequently shows no fear staring down the gun barrel and will step into throws even when he knows he's going to take a shot. Displayed strong poise in critical moments throughout two seasons, including a come-from-behind drive late in the 2014 FCS National Championship game and a come-from-behind win over UNI in 2015 after throwing two early INTs. His decision making as a passer has been good (career TD-INT ratio was 3.2-1, and 4.3-1 in 2015). But he needs to learn when to pull the plug on a play (despite big hand span of 10 inches, he had 10 fumbles in 23 starts and also fumbled at the Senior Bowl). There are two additional areas he will need to improve upon: 1) He has a tendency to lock onto his primary read, and 2) He takes too many risks in the red zone.

Accuracy-1-Displays very good natural accuracy at all three levels when footwork is sound. He understands where to place the ball in certain situations and versus different coverages, and he shows the ability to hit those spots at a high level. Displays the ability to deliver accurate throws from an off-balance platform, but lower-body mechanics need to be more consistent in this area. He's more accurate throwing to his right than his left on the move. Displays quality touch with intermediate throws between the hashes. Puts good arc on deep ball and improved his ball placement on vertical throws as a senior.

Release/Arm Strength-3-Quick, over-the-top delivery. Efficient load-to-arrival time. Overall velocity is solid but not elite. Capable of making all the necessary throws in the NFL, but certain passes will require him to drive off his back foot and get a full weight transfer in order to throw with required velocity. The ball is not always clean coming out and will flutter on occasion. He flashes the ability to change up arm angles and still deliver the ball with adequate velocity.

Pocket Mobility-2-Underrated athlete for his size. Has quality foot quickness and mobility to escape pressure and buy time. Displays the ability to move the chains as a runner. He has a big and sturdy frame and flashes the ability to occasionally ward off would-be sacks. Good pocket presence. Consistently feels the backside rush coming. Shows the willingness to sit in and work through progressions in a muddy pocket, but there are occasions where his internal clock will speed up and he will bail prematurely from a clean pocket. Does a nice job of keeping his eyes down field when extending plays outside the pocket before electing to run.
I think Wentz goes #2 to the Browns. He is a great fit for what Hue likes to do

Like I said Cowboys would be really stupid to draft a QB with the 4th pick. Look over their defense and you'll see why, especially with all the dominant defensive prospects around their pick.
so what do yall think of his throwing motion?

I highly doubt Goff is off the table for Cleveland at this point.

Umm you serious?? You're judging him off that pic?? His release is much better/quicker than our so called franchise QB.

Very compact, quick, the ball comes flying out of his hands in a hurry.

Throwing motion is quick and efficient when throwing to the short and intermediate part of the field

There's an awful lot to like about his throwing style — again it's very natural. He has a good arm, throws with touch when necessary and makes a lot of plays.

Tight release, especially for a player with his long arms. Shifts his weight well in the pocket to work through the noise and keep his hand on the trigger, maneuvering under duress with improved footwork.

Keeps ball high and tight in the pocket and can uncork it quickly with tight, sharp release and little wasted motion. Throws catchable ball with tight spiral.

Quick, over-the-top delivery. Efficient load-to-arrival time.

I mentioned my concerns about Wentz in another thread. I like him just not top 5/10 area because his weaknesses are riskier vs Goff.

Saw this recently which made me even more hesitant and I'm hoping Cleveland takes him off the board before we even have a chance to consider him

The reality of it is that not processing info quickly, lack of anticipation, and lack of field vision are death knells in a QB eval for me.

I can sit here and tell you the positives of Wentz: big, athletic, pretty clean mechanics for a small school guy, solid arm strength.

Believe it or not, he can throw the football to a guy 5 yards away without gunning it straight into the ground or trying to break all of his fingers. True story.
