I do not believe it's a done deal that Buckner is gone. Considering the talent available and the needs of the teams ahead of us, there are many scenarios that could play out. Jaylon Smith being out of the mix as a top 5 pick really hurt us, but I'm seeing that Carson Wentz is getting some top 10 love. Who knows. I honestly prefer quarterback with our pick at 7. I just don't have the confidence in Kap to overcome his shortcomings. But DeForest Buckner would be a great pick. Regardless of whether or not he is there at 7, do you feel comfortable passing on a QB?

Yes, because I don't feel there is a surefire talent there. Kelly made Foles look good. So I think he can make a 2nd rounder look good, since especially we have a high 2nd rounder.

You are right. This system can make some average/below average QBs look good. However, that kind of QB play will not get you in the final four or winning Super Bowls.

This. If you need a system to prop up a QB, you dont really have a QB. The sorts of traits that make for a good QB work across all systems.
I like him a lot...trouble is, we'd have two very young DE's bookending our NT. I like Ian Williams, but he's not even close to being a dominant player. If Baalke drafts Buckner, I'd say he either needs to bring in a vet NT or draft one. If Baalke's only drafting one DL, then my choice would be A'Shawn Robinson, a beastly guy who can play both NT and DE.

Disagree. Ian is the guy to bring back, especially if Mangini returns. No one better than a guy who has excelled in the system.

Yeah Williams was dominant this year. Not taking away what Bowman did but some of his comeback success should be credited to Williams keeping blockers off him.
Man I hope he's there for us at #7. I really wanna beef up our front 7 and oline this offseason.

I also disagree - Keeping Ian is a priority.

I'd be VERY happy id he was our pick.
I could definitely see AA Williams and Buckner as our starting dline, that would be sick.If you don't think Williams was dominant I emplore you to watch some tape. He consistently beat his man and flashed pressure up the middle. This kid has worked his butt off for that payday!
Armstead --- Williams --- Buckner

Lynch --- Bowman --- Hodges --- Harold/Carradine

Try and sign Irvin and throw him into the mix at the other OLB spot with Harold and Carradine. Solid

Imagine if we signed Olivier Vernon. Our front seven would be crazy good.

Armstead---Williams---Buckner

Lynch---Bowman---Hodges---Vernon

Are you talking about 2016? That front 7 would be middle of the pack in 2016 which is still a huge improvement over this year. Armstead should be a decent starter next year. Buckner will be slightly better than Armstead even as a rookie imo. Williams is solid but not a dominant defensive lineman. Vernon would help out our pass rush, but Bowman is not the same player he was pre-injury and may never be the same player. Our linebackers would still struggle in coverage.

In my opinion, Buckner is a terrific prospect but you can find comparable players in free agency. Jack blows away any inside linebacker we could possibly sign in free agency (way more athletic than Trevathon and will be one of the best coverage linebackers in the league from day one imo). This would be my preferred front 7 (drafting Jack and signing Wolfe/Jackson):
Armstead - Williams - Wolfe/Jackson
Lynch - Bowman - Jack - Vernon

Wolfe was resigned.
Picking Buckner makes too much sense. We need another solid DE and he is a Chip Kelly recruit.
Deforest Buckner + Chip Kelly= Deforest Kelley

It is meant to be.
