Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson - Legit alternative to Jared Goff in 2017?

Love his leadership and intelligence.

same here! 30 ints in 2 years is very troublesome. I have not been a big fan of Watson this past season. But watching him take down the strongest and most loaded defense in the country, really changed my perspective. Watson has poise, toughness, and leadership for the next level. Idk about taking him with the #2 pick but a trade back could justify us taking him in the first. Im hoping that maybe CLE is impressed enough to take him #1 overall and we land Garrett or perhaps someone is impressed enough to trade a ransom to CLE
effective in college:
-read option runs while getting slammed around like a rag doll
-screen passes that go for 50+ all day
-jump balls

Effective in NFL
-none of the above

As an evaluator, you always want to see QBs in big moments to weigh how they handle it. Watson, in 2 NC games, was elite.

No he wasn't he choked because he only used one read all game.

?

Blatant sarcasm

The Tebow comparison is a big stretch. Tebow can't throw accurately. The out pattern to Renfrow was a thing of beauty. The back shoulder passes and the pinpoint throw to Leggit at the end were all throws Tebow dreams of making.

Watson has the smarts to fully digest a playbook and can make all the throws. He will go top 5 and hopefully a good coaching staff helps him develop further.

How big of a stretch is it? Tebow's college accuracy % was 1 % lower than Deshauns.

Both ran a spread offense. Both had great intangibles where "all they did was win"

I do think Watson is a better player and his career in the NFL is much brighter but the comparison is not that far apart. You think Tebow was stupid and couldn't learn a playbook?

He had some pretty passes in college too. Watson is very hot and cold when it comes to his accuracy. Yes he threw some beautiful passes yesterday. He also threw a bunch that would've been incompletions if not for his WRs making huge plays. He sails a ton of his passes which is very dangerous in the NFL and will get your WRs killed. He threw a ton of quick outs which his guys helped with big YAC plays.

I don't understand why people knock him for throwing up a jump ball to his playmaking receiver? Aaron Rodgers does the same thing with Jordy Nelson but no one claims Jordy Nelson makes Aaron Rodgers a great player. Watson puts the ball where his receiver can get it.

Tebow threw for nearly 1,700 yards less than Watson and 20 less touchdowns. I know Watson threw more interceptions but is more impactful as a passer than Tebow ever was. Tebow was a run first QB who thrives as a play action one read passer. Watson is only asked to read half the field but is not a run first QB who does pull off his first read. He showed that last night.

Cam Newton had comparisons to Tim Tebow and their numbers are comparable plus they were asked to do similar things.

I think Watson is more comparable to Vince Young with what he is asked to do and how he plays. I don't suggest he will become Vince Young because I think he can do betfer, but Vince Young looked really good his first two years in the NFL

If Vince didn't go crazy he could have been special...now he's just special ed

Back to back national championships says something and won one against the top defense
This guy is head and shoulders better than Goff and Goff went 1 last year

I mean there is literally nothing that Jared Goff does better than Watson. But people like their Air Raid QBs. What can ya do?

Very impressed by his toughness and being clutch in big games. He's a special kid.

Watson fits the ball in challenging positions, back-shoulder fade, low pass over the middle only the receiver can catch, touch pass over the defender. He also threw the ball into some small windows. I like the kid from North Carolina but Watson has played on the biggest stage against arguably one of the best defenses of this generation. He hangs in the pocket and senses the pass rush. Trubisky is at least a year or two behind Watson right now. What else does he have to do?

He has to play exclusively with UDFA for three consecutive years without injury. Even then he's still no Jared Goff.

There's a big difference between playing with a few borderline draft prospects and playing with 7 teammates who will be drafted in the first 3 rounds over the next 2 years. Goff had very little talent around him at Cal. Watson has the most talented offense in the country. If he wasn't producing a lot of yards with 3 NFL WRs, an NFL TE, an NFL RB, and 2 NFL OL, there'd be a serious problem.

Trubisky's supporting cast isn't close to Watson's and Kizer's isn't close to Trubisky's. That has to be factored in if you're going to give Watson credit for wins.

This, but it all hinges on what the browns do..IF WE WANT WATSON

Good post. But haven't you learned that on WZ, wins are the only metric that matters when analyzing a QB.

Don't see how drafting this guy is an upgrade over Kap.

And can one of the mods take Goff's name out of the title of this thred

Go compare their college stats. 58 percent completion for Kap and 67 for Watson. If Watson can improve and carry his completion percentage over like Kap has then he'll be a solid QB.
Still the best QB and most ready (tho still not top 10) ... A Warren Moon in the making !!
