Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson - Legit alternative to Jared Goff in 2017?

All in!!!! Praying RG3 plays like a starter this yr lol
We can only hope Blockhead is gone by season's end so we can actually consider drafting this dude. If that fool for some strange reason is still around you can all just forget that idea.
When does he play?

I mean let's be honest. He can't be worse than Jared Goff. Yikes.

Man I'm one of the guys that wanted Goff. So far it's looking good that we didn't get him. Yikes is an understatement, even if it is just preseason, dude looks horrific in "just" preseason

Jared Goff is just another example of 1) why people need to chill out with their fan demands of who to draft and, 2) why you should never trade away the future for a draft QB. Goff was always going to just be an average QB. But people felt desperate for a QB so they put traits on him (like clutchness) that just aren't true. He's shook. He was the best QB prospect in a poor QB class. Now he's third string behind a 2015 mid round pick and an undrafted player.

I love Watson. But I hope we are at least able to grade him honestly.

Glad you've determined his entire career trajectory already. You should let his agent know.

What a lot of people ignored is that most who liked Goff a lot knew he would take some time. He wasn't a guy that you just throw in there right off the bat, I thought he'd be best served by sitting for a season and just being able to get comfortable playing under center and catching up to the speed of the NFL game. The Bengals used that same approach with Carson Palmer for example.

What I don't agree with is the Rams trading a bunch of picks for a guy who had a ton of upside but would likely need time to develop. I think that was a bad move on their part, seemingly motivated more by the desire to make a big splash after moving to L.A. than anything else.

He may not get there, but there's time.

Or he might develop into a top line quarterback with the time most thought he'd need before he was drafted.

He was a valid Top 10 pick, its not his fault that the Rams traded a whole bunch of draft capital for him. If they were expecting him to start right off the bat, that is on them.

I don't blame Goff for the move the Rams made. I blame Goff for being ranked 91st in the preseason for QB rating. That's really hard to do considering he has almost exclusively played against 2nd and 3rd stringers.

Look, we can sugar coat this all we want and I suspect the "just wait" defense will be utilized until 2018. But if he was going to be elite (and he DOES need to be elite), we would have seen a glimmer against the 2's & 3's he has been playing against. Not enough to start -- but enough to say "oh yeah, I see it".

He may turn out to be an okay QB. But it's highly unlikely he'll justify his draft position. Again, not his fault. It was the Rams decision.

When final rosters are set in a couple days Jared Goff will be one of the worst QBs on an NFL roster.

Rookie preseasons for some recent top QB picks.

Jameis Winston
23/47
48.9%
311 yards
6.6 YPA
0 TDs
2 Ints
52.7 QB Rating

Cam Newton
24/57
42.1%
300 yards
5.3 YPA
1 TD
0 Ints
64.9 QB Rating

Matthew Stafford
30/55
54.5%
389 yards
7.1 YPA
1 TD
4 Ints
52.8 QB Rating

From the limited amount of snaps I saw on GamePass, he just looked like a guy for whom the game is moving too fast right now. With more reps and study time, that will change.

Of those three -- Staffords game is the one who most compares to that of Goff's. Stafford certainly isn't elite. Newton is great, but can make plays in so many other ways. And Winston has a lot to prove, but can make more plays in other ways than Goff. So, those aren't the best comparisons. Like I said -- I'm sure Goff can get better. But I highly doubt he'll ever be an elite QB... which he needs to be given his draft position (and for all the clamoring on this site for him). This is a Watson thread so I'll leave it there.
