The Redskins were better off giving Cousins the franchise tag this year than giving him a long term deal as long as they don't piss him off and convince him to hold out or leave. A 1 year $24 million deal is a great deal for a franchise QB with very little risk in the event that he gets hurt or regresses.
If the alternative is losing Cousins for nothing, I think the Redskins would match a 5 year $125-130 million deal if we offered it next season. How much are we willing to overpay him to ensure that the Redskins don't match us? At some point, you're better off just going with a rookie, particularly if we aren't going to be competitive for a few years anyways.
Any LT deal that he will be offered will be in that price range...and it's not even that it's the guaranteed money end of the day. He's making $44 million in guaranteed cash for the past two yrs of play, Rogers made $54 million over 5 yrs.
I disagree they would match it or they would have already offered him a comparable deal (reports were the deal they gave him had low guarantees) and avoided having to give him all that guaranteed money (with no commitment) for JUST this yr.
