Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson - Legit alternative to Jared Goff in 2017?

Sounds like they test velocity on multiple throws while they're doing drills then post the highest number as the velocity. Deshaun probably has a better arm but was trying to be reserved and throw as accurate as possible since he could be wild at times. There's not an officially drill where they're throwing as hard as they can in front of a radar gun.

LOL at testing velocity, Deshaun Watson has enough arm strength (good arm strength I might add) to make ALL the throws in the NFL. I don't see how that's even being questioned.
Last year it was Goffs hands. This year, its watsons velocity. Whats for next year? Rosens or Darnolds facial structure or wonderlic score?

Draft season is such a wonderful time to analyze literally everything about a player. We criticize things that usually aren't criticized during the season. We have seen Watson play plenty of times, I don't think there is a problem with his arm strength at all. It could be that he is testing out new mechanics and doesn't want to zip it unless its a private workout or until he is comfortable with some new mechanics.
Mahomes was throwing it at 58 MPH and it was a ridiculously overpowered ,unnecessary throw. Someone brought that ish up about Peterman throwing at 54 mph like it was an issue due to supposedly a study of some cruddy QBs throwing under 55MPH. Look at Payton from a few years ago who set off single season records with probably the weakest arm of all starting QBs. Can always make up velocity with timing and anticipation.

Exactly this. I'll defend Mahomes though by saying he won't be throwing bullets to hit a guy 5 yards out like Kap did. He does have touch in his throws. That segment was dumb as far as showing QB ability, it was purely about throwing as hard as possible. He even hit 62 on his last throw.

You should never see that in a game.

It was throwing as hard as possible lol and had a tough time getting it to 58. To break 60 it was innacurate AF lol. He hit 62.
Anyways,we're a California team and we all know Montana and Brady didn't have the strongest arms coming out of college either.

Peyton lost a lot of his arm strength by the end of his career but come on that's not comparable. He had a weaker arm but was the smartest qb on the field who could go through his progressions lightning fast.

Watsons criticisms are not just his arm but that he didn't call plays and read half the field. So the Peyton argument doesn't work. He's probably the greatest game manager of all time.

They show EVERY drill at the combine. If they had a velocity test they would show it since they could hype it up like they do with the 40 times.

Missing the point. It's a threshold drill. Higher doesn't mean better, but want to see at least 55 MPH. Below 50 MPH a red flag.

Benjamin Allbright ✔@AllbrightNFL

For combine velocity measurement for QBs remember this.

Over 55 mph doesnt guarantee success, but under it pretty much guarantees failure

2 mph ball velocity might not seem like a big deal, but it translates to 3 ft travelled on 20 yd throw in same time frame. Huge NFL window

I'm not talking progressions though.. he'd rainbow more throws with anticipation and accurate ball placement/timing. Just saying you don't NEED an elite arm. It's a bonus doe I'll say that.

This guy has no NFL experience and graduated college in 2008... His only claim to fame is an ameture draft guide he published as a pdf...I guess that makes him an expert.

Okay, cool. Where did you see the guy with the radar gun during the throwing drills? Where were the "unofficial" reports on velocity that they'd have been updating on the higher velocity routes, like hitches and slants? Why weren't the velocity numbers known and reported while QBs were wrapping up? GTFO of here with your guess work you're playing off as fact.

His elite decision making allowed him to get away with it though.
