Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson - Legit alternative to Jared Goff in 2017?

What about the other? Did the Pats score a TD off it? Anyhow, sounds like he had a decent game. Still too small of a sample size to make a determination on his overall NFL game.

Edit:

NFL defenses also need time to study tape on new QB's. I remember CK having a good passing day vs the Pats (and a few other teams in 2012). Wentz had the same sort of rookie burst early last year then started to buckle as the season played out. Goff looked like garbage now looks good.

How long should we give QB's till they're at a point where they are who they are? I'd say 3 seasons starting. Maybe two full seasons starting.

As of now I think Watson could be a rank 15-20 QB (long term) in the NFL. Not great but not horrible. A guy like that will benefit from a good defense. I could be wrong. He may end up top 10 down the line or could totally bust out. I just don't see a great pocket passer when I look at his college tape.

He made a bad pass off his back foot while someone was hitting him in the face. Not sure it was a great decision to throw it even without pressure, but he didn't get ant juice into the throw and let the DB undercut it. The Pats scored later off of it.

He honestly played amazingly well. He was under siege all day and just kept making plays.

He showed some flashes I'll give you that, showed some nice touch with accuracy. I still don't think he was worth a 1st round pick but hey, at least you're not trying to parade him around like a certain someone on here who does it for Deshone Kizer.
  • 300 yards passing
  • 40 yards rushing
  • 2 TD (vs 1 real non-Hail Mary INT)

All on the road in your second start vs the Patriots led by one of the greatest defensive minds the NFL has ever seen. I would say that constitutes more than "showed some flashes", especially when you watch how bad their OL is.
Butler: Texans' Deshaun Watson 'an upcoming Cam'

Deshaun Watson reminded the world Sunday why he was a national champion. The rookie quarterback went toe-to-toe with the New England Patriots in a slugfest at Gillette Stadium before ultimately falling to Tom Brady, 36-33.

Watson diced up Bill Belichick's defense to the tune of 301 passing yards on 22-of-33 throws, two touchdowns and two interceptions (the latter coming on a last-second Hail Mary), and he ran for 41 yards on eight keepers.

In a place many rookies have gone to get destroyed, Watson impressed wire to wire.
"He's a handful," Patriots corner Malcolm Butler said afterward, via transcripts distributed by the team. "[He was] running around, people diving at him, missing him. That's a great guy. That's an upcoming Cam Newton."

Behind a wobbly offensive line, Watson's mobility is a difference-maker. In just his second start, Watson wasn't deploying a dink-and-dunk operation, either. Instead, the first-round pick pressed the ball down the field time and again.

"His leadership," Butler said of what impressed him most of Watson. "You see him leading his offensive line, leading some of the veteran players, just keeping his composure, playing the game and not letting anything get too big for him."

After struggling for spells in his debut, Watson showed the strides he can make each week.

"He's an exciting player," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said. "He's a player that never says die. You're always in the game with him. He can make plays on his own. Like all rookies, he has a long way to go but he's shown up pretty well the first two starts.

"I thought Deshaun played his heart out. He's a sharp kid. He's a fun guy to coach. He gets better every day. He's a special kid."

Despite the loss, Sunday indicated the Texans might have finally found a long-term answer under center.

When I use the term "Showed some flashes" IMO that means "highlights in his career". If you think that he'll be doing that on a regular basis or that is his career, then I wouldn't hold your breath. I mean where were you the last two weeks, where he only passed for 102 and 125 yards? And that was against the #2 and #7 ranked defenses, NE is last in the league lol. Again, he showed flashes I'll give him that.
Classy gesture

Where was I?

The Texans have arguably the worst OL in the league (their franchise left tackle is still holding out) and were playing with one regular starter at WR and missing their starting TE. He got in for one half vs the Jaguars after not being given the starter's snaps all summer (the Jags sacked Savage 5 times in the first half if that tells you anything and they were all over DW4 as well). Then he comes back on a short week for his first start on the road and makes the signature play of the game (50 yard TD run).

Let's see what he looks like with a decent OL and a full complement of WRs (Fuller is practicing again, and even if he doesn't prove to have awesome hands will open things up just with the threat of his speed alone). If you think 300 yards passing and 50 yards rushing is going to be out of the realm of normalcy for him as he projects forward, I would disagree with that assertion (not saying he necessarily will do both every game or anything, but neither occurrence will shock me as he gets more comfortable and the team gets better around him).

If you watched any of his games he has looked smooth and comfortable out there, but it has been apparent that the Texans have a beyond s**tty OL and are missing pieces on that side of the ball.

First the excuses when he loses, but no excuses when he wins. I'd hardly call that smooth, looked like a QB that doesn't have too many progressions. This is what I have a problem with in Watson's 300 yards passing: He gets praised for passing for 300+ yards, but when Kirk Cousins puts up any kind of big numbers they're considered padded. I'm not saying you said this, but certain posters do. But getting back to Watson, what do you consider smooth? Going from one to two reads then going back to one and taking the short to mid range? From what I've seen, there's times he stays calm in the pocket then there's times he dances in the pocket, far from the Russell Wilson comparisons pre-draft though.

My opinion still stands of him, he's just not my type of QB and I'm glad he's on another team besides the 49ers.......carry on!!!
Great kid but playing well against the Pats isn't something to get impressed by this season.

How many 300 yard games did Alex Smith have before playing this pats D? How many 4+ TD games did he have before playing this Pats D?

Yea they're the worst or second worst d in fantasy. And gave up the most points thru three weeks.
10/12, 150 yards and 2 TD passes already today 10 seconds into the second quarter. Keep hating tho...

Yea this dude is balling. Looks confident and is doing a good job in the pocket.
Just threw a perfect 50 yard bomb into the endzone that forced the defender to interfere, then he walked into the endzone on first and goal in two minute drill.
