Basically no reason to reach for a QB just to draft one.

Absolutely agree. This QB class is "meh". Would rather have Bosa (or anybody) than make an early mistake. Especially with a competent QB already at the helm.

Very few QB are sure things(Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning and John Elway) so we can't just wait for one. But I do agree we shouldn't reach. If we really want to draft a QB and there's no value at our 1st round pick we should trade down or wait for the 2nd round.

Not sure Andrew Luck is a sure thing ;)

But you're correct which is why drafting those other guys is a gamble. I wonder just how many potential franchise QBs were ruined because they went to teams with horrible talent and coaching just because that franchise felt the need to grab a QB just because they needed one.

I think you look for certain qualities in a QB but if your QB gets overwhelmed because they're tryign to do too much or constantly getting croaked then they break in a sense.

IMO if the team sees Goff/Lynch/Cook whomever they have a shot at in the first round as guys who have a good amount of question marks then it's better to go with a more sure thing at another position.

it's also why I feel like we should avoid grabbing one of those guys unless we get some solid offensive minded coaching here with a proven track record for developing young NFL QBs.
There's no official way to build a team. You can do your due diligence on the draft and get the best guys available. I'd never walk in with the strategy qb after the 4th round or I have to have a qb in the 1st round. We have a need at the position so it has to be on the radar but where we get it is entirely up to what's available. If there's a late round gem you like maybe you do wait a bit or if you don't like the 1st round prospects obviously you have to pass. We may not even need to draft a qb. The answer could be get rid of Tomsula and get Gabbert a competent offensive mind. Not that I'm advocating for that.

I think getting rid of Tomsula and bringing in a legit offensive mind is a MUST for any QB we draft or even Gabbert(who imo is still a stop gap but perhaps can be turned into an Alex Smith like QB then traded away)
if you want a QB and he's not at the top or you're not at the top then you gotta get in the back end of the 1st with the way the rules work now. That 5th yr option on a QB is golden. Otherwise find a guy in the 2nd give him some BS NFI excuse to go on IR(probably cheating) and give him mental reps in year 1. Still get 4 years outta your QB. Such a difficult position to evaluate in the time constraints.

3rd round should be the latest we wait to draft a QB. regardless of how well Gabbert has been playing and even if he continues to play at the same pace.

Anthony Davis better announce quick if he's coming back or not so that we can determine what to do with the 1st round pick.

Still should take Tunsil if he's there.
Can't argue with this data. Great post Phoenix. 3rd round being the longshot round and everything else you'd be looking for a lottery ticket and let's face it, the good have always been surrounded by quality talent and organizational stability.
Bump

This is a great thread that I feel has information that is completely ignored by most football fans.
Want tha Alabama quarterback Jake Coker in tha 5th or 6th round think after everything he shown he could be a real gem ...

This thread lays out a great reason not to draft a QB at all this year. We have two on the roster, 1 drafted in round 1 and the other in round 2. With this class of QB's we are unlikely to improve at the position in round 1 or 2. Go tackle, passrusher in the first two rounds, see what we have at QB with a good offensive coach then reassess the QB postion in the first offseason of the Kelley regime.

We can just wait to sign him as an UDFA
6th round has produced better QBs than 5th and 4th. Draft one in the 6th
If both Kap & Gabby stay then don't draft one.

I counter your argument with one of my own, stolen from the Tampa Bay newspaper.

From the historic 1983 draft class through 2009, teams drafted 34 quarterbacks in the top 10. Half of them were busts and less than one-third became stars, according to a Tampa Bay Times analysis.

Which means that in 30 years, only 10 top 10 QBs went on to become stars.

The entire draft is a crapshoot. Not just 4th round and below. For every one serviceable, not even great, QB drafted in the top 3 rounds, there are 5 or 6 that end up fizzling out.

You build a good team, and just about any QB can succeed on it.
