After the combine he will be a top 10 pick. If goff can be picked at 1, Mahomes has the potential to do that as well. If he kills it throwing at the combine and at his interviews, I am assuming Shanahan would want him for a predraft visit to do more chalk talk and work him out.
He could be the pick at #2 or won't be surprised. He is a more athletic faster Brett Favre.

Well, hopefully he won't steal his backups' weekly QB quizzes and turn them in w/his own name on them, but yeah, I can see the comparison.

I'm not a good predicter when people get drafted, but compared to QBs in the past, Mahomes should be taken in the 1st, but not as a top 5 pick.
Thus, as much as I like Mahomes, I seriously doubt he will be on our team.
I agree. Mahomes has the best pure arm talent in the draft, and that will put him in the 1st rd conversation at some point, if he isn't already. Like you mentioned, compared to QBs in the past, Mahomes should probably go 1st rd. Doesn't mean he will, it depends on team needs and fit.
I'm infatuated with his arm, but there are so many other flags with his game that I wouldn't assume are correctable. He can't play in the league prancing around the way he does. He will have to learn to operate within the structure of a true WCO offense. That is a huge leap to make for a player like him.
Acting like a WCO QB must magically have perfect mechanics and rigidly play within the system is silly. Mahomes needs to play MORE within the system, but the abilities to create and throw off platform allows for the conversion of remarkable plays. Brett Favre threw some of his best passes in a full backpedal. Throwing mechanics are about efficiency in converting force across your body to accelerate the football and control its trajectory. Some guys don't need that to get balls to target with velocity and good placement. Mahomes is a rare thrower. He doesn't always freelance, but he does so very well, just like Rodgers and Favre do/did within GB's WCO. I'd take Favre's career over what we've had since Young left.
Sure, but I think it's a quite a leap to compare to Favre. You're taking my points and going to a very extreme conclusion. I never said he had to rigidly adhere within a system, but he needs to operate with timing and anticipation. I thought of Favre and his fit within the WCO, but for every Favre there is a Jay Cutler and countless other QBs.
Even our own Colin Kaepernick. His defense from Day 1 was that it doesn't matter how it looks, just how the ball comes out when he throws it. Harbaugh said the same thing. Turns out the efficiency of your movements and timing within the offense matters a great deal.
I think Mahomes throws a much better ball with much better touch than Kap, but I am not sold on him yet. I see a big arm QB with several red flags. I'd take a shot in the 2nd rd with the understanding he will need some time to develop, but I'm really not buying him as the cerebral pocket passer we need.

After reading the article, I probably would prefer the North Carolina quarterback; he potentially has the arm and the physicality to handle the tough NFL defenses
Then I read the bust thread.
Overall, it's going to take good coaching and development for this QB class which has garnered negative views.

I don't see Kaepernick as a natural thrower. I think he muscles too many throws, which made it difficult for him to properly place a ball when he threw with touch. He also struck me as deliberate and analytical when operating w/in the play, and he looked more comfortable negotiating a broken play, where it was his athleticism against the defense. Whether Kap ever becomes more natural and smooth at QB, he gave us some exciting moments and good memories that I'll always be thankful for.
I see Mahomes differently. There are clear examples of him manipulating defensive backs with his eyes, throwing on time from the pocket, and subtly adjusting his delivery to place a ball away from defenders. He doesn't do it all the tie, but it was Bill Walsh himself who said (to paraphrase): If a player does it once, he's capable of it, and he only needs a good coach to keep him doing it right. Yes Mahomes' biggest plays are when he creates, but the same is true of Aaron Rodgers. Yes, he throws with inconsistent feet, but he does so uncommon velocity and ball placement like Favre. Both of those players are/were wildly successful in the WCO. A structured coach like Shanahan could likely coax more Rodgers than Favre out of Mahomes, in time. Mahomes has a reputation for loving football, having a tremendous work ethic, and for being very bright.

I like his confidence and ability to playmake. I think a coach like Shanahan will try to find a balance with him, much like Holmgren succeeded getting out of Favre.. What ultimately makes these guys successful is a consistent, repeatable process when dropping back to throw. You can't be consistent if the drop back is inconsistent. Walsh also understood that, with his scheme tying his QB's dropback to his progressions.
The ability to make off-schedule plays is a big bonus, whether its in the pocket or outside of it. All the best QBs have this ability, but first and foremost they need to have the basics down. I see a guy like Aaron Rodgers as a player who has pretty good balance between game-managing and play-making at the right times.
Ultimately I trust Shanahan to determine which guy to take. If its Mahomes, great, I'll be all for it. I don't question his football character or talent, only his ability to break some bad habits and form some new, good ones. I'll leave it up to the new regime to figure it out.

The problem is that nobody would doubt Kaep's ability, he just never got the mental side down. Whether or not Mahomes can, is up to Mahomes. They're not the same. I've said it since day 1, he reminds me of Favre, and I'd take a chance with him. I just wouldn't take it with the 2nd pick.

If it is true that the Bears are talking about 'Shocking the world" and taking Mahomes at 3, then some other team may want him bad enough to trade up to 2 and give away the draft farm. Heck, if he is the star at the combine maybe Cleveland will take him at 1 ... lol.

Mahomes has all the traits Shanahan's looking for in a QB...beyond that there are two other things to take note of. The first is he showed continuous progress as the starting QB under TT coach Kliff Kingsbury. KK gave him a lot of freedom to throw the ball all over the field, and for the most part, Mahomes was very successful doing that. The other thing is the dude's fearless...that's a very important factor in how Shanahan judges QB's. Mahomes has huge cajones. I'd say it's easier to teach a QB to throttle back just a bit to have success in the NFL than try to teach a guy who played in a more conservative offense to dial up his aggression.

He could be the pick at #2 or won't be surprised. He is a more athletic faster Brett Favre.
Goff was a much better prospect. Better stats and had some nice footwork. Huge difference.

That really has no bearing on how good a prospect you are.
