Courtland Sutton WR SMU 6'4 220lbs

So how do we get a big fast receiver? Do we trade our #1 and pick up a couple of #2's. Will anyone make that trade since our #1 will be a late first rounder? If we pick a receiver in the first then we don't have another pick for LB and O line depth until the 5th. No matter what we do there will be fans that say we should have done something else. We don't have a lot of options.

No they don't...they're one of the best teams in converting 3rd downs and are top 3 in the NFL in pts per game.

No, that is a want not a need.

Good receivers, great route runners, guys who can win on 3rd down...that is a need.

Which they currently have. They're converting on 3rd downs at an elite level and top 3 in scoring.

People and wanting a big WR just cause lol. Its really weird imo.

I remember there was an article recently from a former scout who stated at the end of the day the scouts had very little input on who was drafted.

Bitter ex-employee talks crap about former employer, story at nine.

Every team will have hits and misses at the end of the day. The same team that drafted Sutton took Jake Butt one pick before George Kittle.

You don't get to 8-0 without having a significant amount of hits when building your roster and this team has done a largely good job in that department since Shanalynch got hired.

Yup! I remember this time last yr someone talking about (might have even made a thread) on how the Bears built this amazing team and could do no wrong. How SF messed stuff up yada yada....

Wrong on that one lol

Fans always seem to think big physical receivers are more durable and harder to defend. Fans also always seem to think we need a true #1.

Yet we see teams regularly win SB's without the true #1, we routinely see the big receivers get hurt as much as the smaller ones and we routinely see that it is not size that makes a receiver more difficult to defend against.

The game has evolved yet some fans are still a little archaic in their line of thinking.

Pretty much. The game is much more spread out as well. Throw in we have more and more "bigger" CBs and most of those guys have issues with those quicker WRs.

I'm all for good WRs big/small whatever. This scheme requires dudes to get open quickly. If you can find a 6-3 215lb dude that can do that, sign me up

He's under contract and won't be a FA anytime soon

Hey can we ever just post dope plays without guys arguing about who was right or wrong during the draft? I could understand being pissed if we passed in Sutton for Pettis . But that didn't even happen. Sutton was taken earlier than where we could've traded up in the second. It simply was not gonna happen either way. So it doesn't matter

There's some stud WRs in the draft....I think we are fine at WR especially if we can resign Sanders. IMO safety needs to be upgraded.

Yeah at the time Pettis was the right choice for our offensive scheme Kyle likes wrs that are quick and run good routes not necessarily the type that can make contested catches which is a perfect fit for Joe Flacco and the broncos style. If he came here he probably wouldn't look as good.

That is BS. Kyle doesn't just go for one type of WRs, if he did he wouldn't have drafted Jalen Hurd (who is even bigger than Sutton and fantastic for contested catches). Let's face it, the WR of choice in that draft class should have been Sutton and Denver was smart and got to him before us. We lost out. Pettis hasn't shown jack. Just you watch, we will have to carry on drafting WRs until we find that true No.1 guy. Sanders is 32 and he won't be here forever. The rest of our WR corps are just role players including Deebo. If Jalen Hurd can get healthy and does make it back, he will have the highest ceiling. The rest of them will just run jet sweeps and catch slants.

Hurd was drafted more as a gadget than just a wr not saying Shanahan won't draft a big wr, I mean Pettis is 6'1 200lbs and Debo is 5'11 220lbs it's not like we are drafting tiny wideouts. How many 6'4 wrs turn out that weren't a sure fire top 10 pick?

Trey Downe into the second round and gain a third would be the preferred scenario if it's possible.

Then S, CB, OT, OG and Edge are all areas I would hope we could add more talent to. Continue to develop Deebo and Hurd and resign Sanders.
For sure we MUST resign Sanders! He did say that at this point in his career he wants to play for a contender. Even if we dont win it all this year, we now seem built to be true contenders for the next few years, as long as we draft players using a 'long term' needs philosophy.
Still making beastly catches and has a throw too.
