Saw it suggested that's landry wouldn't be an every down player. Why wouldn't he? The Leo isn't asked to do a whole lot in base. What he /is/ asked to do, Landry excels at.

He's going to be replacing Eli at SAM in base D. So he will have responsibilities outside of rushing on passing downs.

Why would we put him at SAM when he's a textbook LEO?

Because he won't be able to hold up in the run game. Mayock literally has him pegged has a 3-4 OLB. He's going to put his hand in the dirt on passing downs.

SAM = strong side, near alignment, set edge in run game.

LEO = weak sided, wide alignment, explode into backfield, disrupt play

If we're not on the same page on those definitions for this scheme, then I can see why were disagreeing on where to play him.

Were not on the same page because you don't understand he's not a full time LEO. He's not big enough to play DE full time. Just like Solly should not be playing LEO full time.

Chubb has the size to play the position all 3 downs, like Myles last year. Landry is not a 3 down LEO.

He's 250 that's plenty big. Size isn't a major factor for Leo. Check this out:

https://www.fieldgulls.com/football-breakdowns/2013/6/4/4350052/seahawks-defense-pete-carroll-leo-and-5-tech

"The best pass rusher on the team is usually the defensive end to the open side of the field. That puts him on the quarterback's blind side and makes him a C gap player in this defense. We often align him wider than this in order to give him a better angle of attack and allow him to play in space. We align him a yard outside of the offensive tackle most of the time. He has to play C gap run support but at the same time he is rushing the passer like it is third and ten. He has to be able to close down however if the tackle blocks down on him. (He) has to be one of your best football players. Size does not matter as much. We want an athletic player who can move around." - Pete Carroll

I'll stop here. But it's pretty obvious to me that Landry would play Leo in base, and then one of the rush ends in sub. Only off the field for rest.

Thomas played the position roughly 25lbs heavier and came in a much better run support player. They are not going to put Landry outside full time.
I am hopeful about Landry, he showed flashes of greatness and obviously if he pans out he'd be a huge asset.

I just can't look passed the red flags, limited pass rush moves, huge drop in production, massive liability against the run and I just can't get behind a pick at the top of Round 1.

I'd much rather Jeff Holland or Duke Ejifor later on. Or even OO if he dropped to the middle of Round 2.
Earned not given.

Huh? Cliff Avril Is 6-3 252 and was their starting LEO for yrs in Seattle. In 2016 he has more snaps than anyone on that DL.

Sam Hubbard put up a 6.84 3 cone at 6'5 270.

Solid rebuttal
Niners have 0 elite speed rushers right now. I would take Landry at #9 without hesitation if thats who they like. With QB addressed, pass rush is the biggest weakness on the team IMO.
Why does he have to be a full time Leo? Figured Solly is Leo on run downs. With Landry at Sam. Then based off the matchup , he rushes from LEO on passing downs.

Vic led the league in sacks in 2016 rushing from SAM

I'd take Landry and drafted another pass rusher later in the draft.

This. I can't fathom drafting a defender that can't play 3 downs being drafted at 9. Roquan Smith at 9 and Jeff Holland in the 2nd for pass rush help. We messed up last year by not taking Lawson. I just don't see the value in Landry in the 1st unless he's playing DL/Elephant.

Probably wouldn't help to ask how much Yanick Ngakoue weighs... . For that matter, Reed and McKinley from Atlanta both weigh about 250, as well.

jreff, man, it's okay to be wrong sometimes. Maybe Landry would play SAM for the 49ers and move to DE in subs, but he's well w/in the weight range to play LEO. His average arm length would likely be more of a hindrance at SAM, where he'd be expected to set the classic rush edge more frequently (albeit against a TE much of the time).

He's damn near the same size as Eli.
