Harold Landry Boston College DE/OLB

jreff, man, it's okay to be wrong sometimes. Maybe Landry would play SAM for the 49ers and move to DE in subs, but he's well w/in the weight range to play LEO. His average arm length would likely be more of a hindrance at SAM, where he'd be expected to set the classic rush edge more frequently (albeit against a TE much of the time).

Yannick wieghs 242 and has shorter arms then Landry

He's damn near the same size as Eli.

And Seattle liked Eli as a possible LEO during the draft process.

And Saleh has him at SAM.

With all the talk about stopping the run, why would we drop Landry into a full time role at DE? None of our actual DE's are under 270. Keeping Solly at LEO on run downs and then moving Landry to LEO on passing downs makes the most sense.

Robert Mathis who retired a couple years ago, played just about 15 years in the league at 245.

Stopping the run is not about weighing a certain amount.

This. I can't fathom drafting a defender that can't play 3 downs being drafted at 9. Roquan Smith at 9 and Jeff Holland in the 2nd for pass rush help. We messed up last year by not taking Lawson. I just don't see the value in Landry in the 1st unless he's playing DL/Elephant.
I wouldnt mind Roquan either but this defense will not make the next leap without a serious pass rush. If they elect to draft Landry I would be good with it. Also to be honest elite pass rushers (assuming thats what Landry becomes) are not paid to stop the run. Your making way too big of a deal out of playing 3 downs. Aldon Smith was a part time player his first year and had an amazing impact on the defense.

He can play SAM on base downs and push to LEO, there'd a million different things you can do man.

The list of 250+ pound D-Linemen drafted in R1 with sub 6.9 3-cones at combine since 2000:

DeMarcus Ware
JJ Watt
David Pollack
Melvin Ingram
Joey Bosa
TJ Watt

(Soon to be) Harold Landry

That's what they did with Aldon Smith his first yr...how'd that work? Derek Barnett only came in on passing downs this year, Beasley was in 60% of the time when he lead the league in sacks.

Also why not just put him at SAM on base downs and push him to LEO on passing downs.

People have been complaining about no edge rush, now people are complaining about drafting a edge rusher? You guys forget how important it is to get to the QB?

And we tried AA there last year. Throwing s**t at the wall...

This is Eli's last year under contract. Drafting Harold and letting him take over the SAM makes sense if we let Eli go.

We still need somebody to play the other DE on passing downs long term. So the idea of drafting a true LEO is still there for next year.

Okay dude, you continue to do you. Obviously, you know better than 3 other teams running this defense and the 49ers coach/GM, plus several posters here. Fact is, he ways the same or more as the starting LEOs for the other teams in the same defense. If he is drafted by the 49ers, he might play SAM, or he might play LEO. Shoot, he might play both, I don't know. It's silly, stubborn, and embarrassing for you to pretend that you DO know, one way or another. Let it go.

I have no idea why you think he can't play LEO is it size that you have an issue with?

He's the same size as Chris Avril who's been Seattle's LEO for a couple yrs. Brooks Reed has been ATLs LEO and he's 6-3 254, yannick ngakoue is 6-2 246.

Elite short area quickness.

Elite bend.

When healthy, he put up insane sack numbers.

Sign me up.
I dunno my webzone braddahs, I have a strong feeling that Landry will be our pick.
