The talented signal-caller was a participant in the Elite 11 competition as a high schooler and he returned this year to visit and workout. There was buzz about Darnold's impressive showing in the QB competition at the event. However, when I asked the coaches/staffers what stood out about Darnold, they each mentioned his humility and willingness to learn. He's always asking questions and he doesn't act like he has all of the answers. I also had several sources close to Darnold tell me they wouldn't be surprised if Darnold played two more seasons at USC. As a redshirt sophomore, he can declare for the draft as early as 2018.

That's always been one of my concerns prior to this year's draft when people said wait for next year. If we tank and the top prospects stay in college it could be a wasted pick and mean another year of tanking to get them the following year. So waiting for next year for that QB has always been a questionable thing for me when the top prospects have eligibility remaining that could see them stay in college.

You can have this argument every year, but year after year they come out more often than not.

Barkley and Leinart stayed. And I'd argue it didn't help either; however, Leinart would have been drafted in a similar slot if he left a year earlier. Sanchez was smart and left early... Ironically of those three QB's, he was the one that should have stayed as he had all the physical skillsets the other two didn't, but didn't have the reps that may have helped in move past the rookie QB sand trap.
Every year we are projected to take a QB in the 1st round, hasn't happened since 2005!

Stupid to project anyone at this point since we don't know when we'll be picking or who will be available.

Having said that, if we're picking close to where we were this season and the top guys expected to declare actually do then I'd certainly think we'd pull the trigger unless Beathard shows something really impressive throughout camp/preseason and the regular season or we sign Cousins.

If the 49ers are drafting below 10 and above 5, I think it will be an offensive lineman/BPA. After 10, big chance it's a QB. Under 5, big chance it will be a QB and half the board will want Shanahan fired.

Why do you think there's a big chance we pick a QB if we're picking after 10 in the draft? Wouldn't that mean Hoyer had a pretty good year or the team is instantly a playoff contender with Cousins? In either case, I can't imagine why we'd choose to take a step back and get a rookie QB instead of a guy who can help us right away.

In my opinion, if we're picking in the top 5, there's a very good chance we pick a QB even if we have to trade up slightly to get our guy. It's too early to accurately project the draft now, but my guess is Darnold and Allen are both gone in the top 3-4 picks and Rosen may be gone as well. If we're one of the worst teams in the league again in 2017, I'd rather get a rookie who we can rebuild with than overpay a veteran like Cousins to come to a rebuilding team and basically throw away 1-2 seasons of his career.
He just reminds me of Aaron Rodgers with the way he makes plays

I think the top 3 QB's in next year's draft will be gone by pick five. Soooo, if the 49ers are at 6-10, there will be better options at other positions. After pick 10, then they have an opportunity to draft a QB that wasn't as highly rated, sitting them for a year, without making major sacrifices on the BPA's.

That's my thinking but I'm not going to pretend I'd make a semi competent GM.

They'll either sign Cousins/Garoppolo or trade a king's ransom to get one of the top 3. They won't punt the FQB question to 2019.

I can't see them waiting so hoping your right.
Been watching both Rosen and Darnold and I'm leaning towards Darnold having the potential to be a better overall quarterback with Rosen being able to contribute early. Darnold has the talent, good, not great arm, excellent pocket movement and awareness, very good mobility,in the latter two areas he reminds me a lot of Aaron Rodgers, he's just pretty raw overall. I do think he has a pretty high ceiling but I think he'd struggle if he became a starter as a rookie. If he comes out after this season I think he'd really benefit from sitting for a year whereas I think Rosen could step in and start from Day 1 though if Darnold goes to the right team and the right coach I could see him being a monster eventually.

I do expect Darnold to go back to school for 2018, come out in 2019 and be the top QB off the board then.

I think Darnold is the best college QB (as of this moment). But not by a ton. Rosen is right there. The thing fans wil have to understand about Rosen is he plays on a team with receivers that lead the PAC in drops and an offensive line that would have trouble with four handicapped girlscouts. So, either one (IMO) is would be awesome as a 49er pick.

Question: Didn't Darnold start out in a Pro style offense first?

Yeah, give me the youngster Darnold over the aging fast Cousins.

Yeah that short receiver they have I think is number 10 has some of the worst hands I've seen. But he sure celebrates like he's great when he actually catches a pass.
