Signing Jimmy would be smarter.

They'll have 17 mil in cap space. Have to cut people just to get enough to franchise tag. Would they let Malcolm Butler leave just to keep Jimmy?

Darnold would be a better prospect on a team with a poor o-line (compared to Rosen) but if he goes to a team with a very structured passing game requiring a pure pocket passer I don't think he'd do as well. Rosen is simply a better fit for Shanahan.
I don't see Darnold being an elite field general in the NFL right out of the gates. More like a Carson Wentz with potential to play like Big Ben down the line (if he refines his pocket game) or perhaps a large Russ Wilson type QB but he doesn't have Wilsons speed in small spaces so he'd be better off learning to stay in the pocket in the NFL.
He needs to work on his mechanics and staying in the pocket- playing within the offense as designed. Whoever drafts him will probably work on that before he starts or they'll craft an offense with a lot of roll outs, bootlegs etc. He rolls right frequently. If I'm a D coordinator I'd try to take the right side of the field away.
I'd take Darnold if Rosen is gone but I'd want him to sit for at least half a season learning behind a journeyman pocket passer. A full season would be better. Hoyer might be a good bridge QB for that scenerio.

This play is great example why Darnold is hard to evaluate... sloppy mechanics, throwing from wide open stance. But it's right on the money pic.twitter.com/jexzFFL0hK
