I hate to say it, but I see the next Sanchez more likely than the next Palmer. Sam had a lot of challenges this season but some of those... a good number of them... were self inflicted.
Having an immature coaching staff didn't help at all but he owns a good portion of the concerns.
Edit: And just remember, at the college level... Sanchez had a better arm and threw less interceptions. He also had a weaker receiving core and believe it or not, poorer offensive coaching.
The more a QB looks down the field even while pass rushers are bearing down on him, the more he'll fumble. Most guys just check down or throw the ball away. His instincts are good but they'll have to be tempered.
Sanchez was good when he immediately came to the league, but he had a coaching staff that didn't know what to do with QBs. But Sanchez has also had other chances.
I also don't know why Sanchez is being used as a comparison aside from both being SC QBs. I see Roethlisberger and Wentz, but with the wrong staff he could be Jameis Winston.
I used Sanchez because I've watched him closely. I can't speak very comfortably about accurate comparisons with other programs. I just have seen a lot from Darnold, independent of legitimate excuses, that has me thinking that he better go to a team with a good qb coach and patience. In spite of the adulation, he did not improve this year. And while he was at SC, we all tended to have that under our breath comment, "which Darnold will show up?".
