Sam Darnold

He really does everything well, and I don't say that lightly... He looks legit in all facets of the game: size, arm strength, pin-point accuracy, footwork, poise, escapeability, throwing on the run, throwing from the pocket, going through progressions, and improvising.

Could easily start in the NFL and be productive, with good potential of being great.

We want him plain and simple. He looks like Peyton Manning / Andrew Luck / Matt Ryan / Aaron Rodgers amalgamate...

My only knock on Darnold is he is a LOT like Favre. Darnold makes amazing reads and throws but sometimes.... those throws end up as picks. His ability to pull magic out of his ass tempers this outcome, but I'll be the first to admit, Darnold will throw an interception... he just makes up for it with a couple of touchdowns. If the D can do it's job. This isn't an issue. If you're D sucks... ya, that maybe a problem... Either way, he's the best College QB in the PAC12 and possibly NCAA. The way he plays should transfer well to the NFL because reads are not his problem. That's actually the biggest part of his game. The amazing arm strength and the ability to flat out Big Ben people to the turf is just a party bonus.

He's got a good arm, but I wouldn't call it amazing. I agree on making reads though - I think he's a lot more NFL ready than the guys coming out this year. His arm strength looks pretty similar to Trubisky's and is pretty far behind Mahomes and Kizer in this past draft class and Allen in next year's draft class. In his 2016 highlights, there's not a single throw that leads me to believe he can throw a football 70 yards. He has good arm strength and was able to complete some throws to the opposite side of the field, but the ball doesn't jump out of his hand like it does with Josh Allen.

Well, his arm strength may not be your definition of amazing but the first throw in that highlight reel was 30 yards across the field on his back foot... sooo, ya. I haven't seen a whole lot of QB's period pulling that off... let alone having it end up with a TD instead of a turnover fumble snap.
How many times do you need a guy to throw 70 yard passes?

No one is saying he doesn't have a good arm. The word "amazing" is just overused here. He doesn't have as strong of an arm as Mahomes or Kizer in this draft, or Allen in the next draft. Favre had an amazing arm because he had the strongest arm in the NFL. Darnold has a good arm, but it's not top three within 2 draft classes, so...
I think Rosen is clearly the better prospect at this time. However, Darnold is still a teenager (for 2 more days). He's nowhere near a finished product, yet. He may surpass Rosen...

To me, it's Rosen 1 and Darnold 2 or vice versa it could really go either way. But that's why I don't think both will declare when any one of them could be the #1 overall the following draft.

I think we'll be about 8-8 next season and will have to pay a ransom to move up to get a FQB

Cousins will be a Niner unless he gets hurt

There are 3 QBs next year, one could slide to 5

And if not we can snag Derwin James!!

If they're franchise QBs, there's no incentive to come back another year to try to get picked #1. Both of them are way better off coming out as soon as they can do they reach free agency sooner. Rookies are making peanuts on the current bargaining agreement while mediocre free agent QBs like Osweiler get paid fortunes. 5 years on a rookie deal followed by $25 million/year (likely more 5 years from now) is way more attractive than playing for free another year to get a marginally higher rookie contract which still pays them less over the first 4 years than they'd earn on the first 5 years as the #2 pick next year.

Luck is a good comparison, but he's a poor man's Luck in my opinion. Not quite as big, not quite as athletic, his release is a little slower, and he has a slightly worse arm. Still a lot to like though and could end up being worth the #1 pick. I'm excited about the QBs in this draft class.

Not many QBs come out with Luck's size (6'4 240 now), athleticism (not far off Cam Newton as an athlete), and arm strength (73-74 yard throw at his pro day). Darnold won't have quite the same measurables, but Jeremiah obviously likes him a lot. Jeremiah was spot on about Watson going into this season describing him as a poor man's Marcus Mariota when everyone else was saying he was a lock for the #1 or #2 pick.

I need more games to see of Sam before I can compare him to luck...he's good no doubt. I like Rosen and Allen as well.
Nobody wants this guy more than the Jets do.

I'm kinda hating the Dumervil signing right now. I don't think it makes us that much better, but adding veterans makes it less likely we'll wind up getting our franchise QB (hopefully Allen, Darnold, or Rosen). We should be in full on tank mode like the Jets right now.

Hopefully the rationale for bringing in Dumervil was that he can teach some of our younger guys how to rush the passer. He's obviously been able to overcome physical limitations (size/length) to be a successful pass rusher, so hopefully his work ethic/skill level transfers over to some of our younger guys like Eli Harold.
