So this. Not sure why some like this dude. I dont see it

we need off-ball LBers dude. This scheme is based around our LBers being able to fly around.

You wished he made more plays? He was basically playing big slot at BYU. Dude looked like a natural WILL at the Senior Bowl. He's got the range and instincts to play the position along with the athletic ability

Go look at the numerous clips on in this thread if you don't see it.
As much as I like Warner, I'll be the first to admit that him playing LB is a projection. He didn't do it in college. That said, the overhang/force role he played wasn't very conducive to playmaking, so you have to absolutely factor that in when you're watching his tape. He played out of position in a role that doesn't exist in the NFL.

Which leads to the point that I don't think this draft is as deep at LB as others. Guys like Leonard, Baker, Warner, O'Daniel, etc. are not sure things at stacked LB.

Trust me, I have watched most of his games this year. While there are moments he flashes, I don't have him graded any more than a late 3rd round prospect. He had 87 total tackles for the year, which is less than 7 per game. In his last 7 contests, he had 36 total tackles, about 5 per game. I just don't see enough productivity to be excited about him.

Consistency is really important, which was my criticism of Warner. The UNLV tape is simply not good, at all:

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEA!

Interesting and fun facts about Fred Warner.

He is from San Marcos CA (North County San Diego). He went to Mission Hills High School. It's one of the best High School programs for football in the area. 6'3" 236 lbs. 4.6 forty. He probably plays a little faster than that. I don't think he had great production from a #'s perspective but what he is great at is flying all over the field. He really covers a lot of ground sideline to sideline. Plus he can cover RB's and even TE's or WR's sometimes. He's pretty fast and with his tall length he is pretty effective in coverage.

He was a really big star in High School at a super premier program in San Diego. Mission Hills has won the San Diego Section Championship a few times. I believe they did it in his time era. There were some other really good players on that team. Some in college and some pro prospects too.

I can't say I followed him a huge amount at BYU. But from talking to a lot of people who know him they regard him as a pretty good speed LB and excellent in coverage. That's where he can really excel. He's a very good but maybe not super elite athlete. IMO he plays faster than that timed speed. I saw him play in High School and he was really fast running around and a hard hitter and good tackler.

You would like to see some bigger numbers. But he is a real good athlete, has height and frame and can cover really well. I think there are some good tools there. I'm not sure how they plan on using him or how they see him? But he is a very good athlete with a real good frame too. You would like to see more production yes. But he is a pretty good athlete.

He was very highly recruited out of High School BTW. There were a lot of stories about him. He eventually chose BYU. But he had other offers too. I believe there was some kind of connection there for him as far as I understand. Like somebody that he already knew there? I'm not sure if it was a player or coach or program familiarity or what? But somehow he was a little connected there at BYU and that's one reason he chose it.

So I hope this background helps out some. It's going way back to his early days. But some interesting information in there for you.

Mormon?

I don't think he is. A lot of people play there on an athletic scholarship that are not Mormon. I believe there were several Mission Hills Grizzlies players (the High School in the San Diego area) that went there over the years. The coaching staff had kind of established a report with the High School coaching staff. They got along well and referred some players over the years who had some success. Also the players knew previous guys who went there a year or 2 or 3 ago. So they would arrive on campus already knowing other players and friends making the transition easier and more acceptable to them. I believe a lot of it was that.

Warner killed the Senior Bowl, showing he can make the transition off the ball after playing as a big slot and a non-pass rushing edge defender at BYU. I think he's going to be an even better pro than he was in college, as his ball skills and range in coverage should get him on the field right away. He's got to finish better as a tackler, but he gets off blocks better than any linebacker in this class not named Rashaan Evans.

Ideal Scheme Fit: WILL linebacker who can be versatile in coverage.

Guys who kill it in the Senior Bowl often seem to move on to become at least decent NFL players.
