Roquan Smith, LB, Georgia

Myles Jack is the only prominent modern LB I've seen that beat blocks with consistency. The amount of hip torque he generated at 225 pounds was incredible. He would jar the s**t out of OL. Textbook hip explosion. I'm so happy to see him balling in the NFL. I LOVED me some Myles Jack coming out of the draft.

What's funny is most fans would think those videos show he struggles to shed blocks, which is what people all over youtube were whining about when watching his college videos before the draft. They just don't understand the game. They think a linebacker being good at "taking on" means he takes on the offensive lineman and sheds the block the way a good defensive lineman would. In the scouting world, however, being a good "take on" guy as a linebacker only refers to "beating up" the blockers. They don't expect them to shed, they only expect them to be "physical" and disrupt with that snap into contact.

In the scouting world, Junior Seau, Ted Johnson, and Levon Kirkland were considered the best linebackers in "taking on" at the point.

The exception being with the Sam when he is playing over the tight end. Then they're expected to set the edge.

Those two positions are tied to only specific things of contribution, which don't solve the rushing attacks we'll face.

You stop gurley, you win.

You stop Johnson, you win.

You contain Wilson, you win.

1. Suh, and aaron donald arent stars? Plus, you know whats the best way to contain gurley, johnson and wilson? Be able to run the ball and keep them off the field. A guard helps with that.
2. a fast speed rusher against the seawhawks terrible offensive line can't help you win? Bill Walsh said a pass rusher was the second most component of a team outside of the Qb. As good as roquan it would be easier to find players similar to him in later rounds than a speed rusher. Considering the rams have a good passing game on top of their running attack I believe having a superior pass rush will help with that. Harder to run the ball on 2nd and 3rd and long after a sack.

There is plenty of talented players. To talk as though a will linebacker is the only position that can help us at this point is ridiculous. Telvin smith was a 5th rounder, Lavonte david was a second rounder, Devondlre campbell was a fourth rounder and kj wright was a fourth rounder. Don't get me wrong, I would be totally fine with having Roquan, but it's not like a Will can't be found somewhere else.

Good post. Completely agree.

I agree with you, Mr. Zilla.

Middlekauff(former NFL scout) had this say about Roquan Smith and stack/shed:

and for those unaware, Reuben played MIKE in that game.

Oh yeah, and Lewis made 17 tackles in this game, and he didn't shed a block on a single one of them.

stop quoting irrelevant statistics. The game has changed. You think showing anecdotal stats for a championship game almost 20 years ago helps your case? Come on man.
Smith seems like he'd be the perfect fit, but I just can't get over how poorly he disengages and how easily teams picked up yardage when they took advantage of that weakness. I watch what I can, and am not a huge college ball guy, but man every video of Smith that isn't a highlight video seemed to have several of these above described plays and in some cases almost seemed like the offense saved targeting him for when they really needed that yardage.

He scares me and while an unpopular opinion, I am not in favor of drafting him in the top half of the 1st round.

OMG SHOCKER Roquan was always LB1.

Colts doe

Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline relays that there's a recent groundswell of support for Georgia LB Roquan Smith as the first linebacker selected in the draft.
This flies somewhat in the face of the conventional wisdom which has held for most of the evaluating season, as Virginia Tech's Tremaine Edmunds has been widely viewed as the likely first linebacker selected. As a wise man once said, not so fast my friend. Pauline hears that the Colts very much like the 6-foot-1, 236-pound Georgia standout, but would like to move down from No. 6 if they're going to draft him.

i think this taking on blockers criticism is a little overrated. He is fast enough to get to the guy before blockers can take him on. Plus they still have to account for buckner, a much improved solomon and (hopefully) Foster. If we go Smith or Landry, i would consider the 1st round a success.

Three guys I think Lynch and Shanahan like with the 9th pick are Marcus Davenport, Minkah Fitzpatrick and Roquan Smith. Aside being the best LB in the draft, I think Lynch and Shanahan (Sorry guys I hate using the word ShanaLynch) will love the leadership qualities, work ethic and the humble person that Roquan Smith is. Those IMO, are pretty important qualities when taking someone in the top 10 let alone 1st round.

Smith is my favorite. He could be gone by 9

I think the 4 QBs going in the first handful of picks will save us in the end. Barkley and Chubb are going before the number 9, and Nelson looks like a perfect fit for the Bears. The Bucs will probably go for secondary help. So, Smith will probably be on the board at 9. I see him at 9, Edmunds at 10, and then Vander Esch going in the next 3 or 4 picks.

If Smith is gone by 9, I think the Niners have to put a big bullseye on Vander Esch. Great athlete, great productivity, leader, and gigantic ceiling.

As much as i want to trade down. You guys' argument about leadership is actually moving my needle down from trading down.

Dude was always a good talent and perfect fit but i always wanted more bullets. But this defense does need leadership and if he can help rueben off the field.....

Kudos to you and others on pointing out the leadership aspect.

I'm in agreement with those 3 as long as they feel like Minkah can start at FS.

The leadership is a big plus. People can debate back and forth about his potential on the field but in terms of intangibles and leadership he is about as good as it gets. Dude was going boss mode at the Combine even, huddling up the other LB's, taking charge, he just oozes leadership ability, the sort of a player that guys just naturally fall in line behind. You add him and you're adding a strong leader for a young defense going forwards, a guy who'll earn the respect of veterans and hold others accountable.
