Would be more insurance than a replacement and if Froster gets his stuff together then they could form a potentially devastating duo at LB.

Roquan also brings leadership, something this defense currently lacks.

Also.....

Regardless of Foster's status, Smith would be a logical choice for the 49ers. Veteran Malcolm Smith, who missed last season with a pectoral injury, is expected to start at one of the inside linebacker spots in 2018.

But the guaranteed money in his contract runs out next spring, according to Overthecap.com. That leaves open the possibility of becoming a salary cap casualty before the 2019 league year if he doesn't play well enough to stick around. The Super Bowl MVP from 2013 signed a five-year contract with San Francisco last spring after two underwhelming seasons with the Raiders.

Malcolm Smith will be 30 by the 2019 season and the 49ers could look for an eventual replacement

Again, I wouldnt be mad at it, However, its a deep class. Why not snag a LB in round 3, and instead target a need from a less deep talent pool?

LB is certainly the safest pick, especially if the choice is Smith, but i dont think its the biggest impact pick, and i also dont think LB will be BPA at 9. I think a top 5 prospect, possibly top 3 talent, will fall to us as well.

The vast majority of players in every draft are busts/disappointments, ESPECIALLY after the first round. The chances of a 3rd round pick being anything better than mediocre are extremely low. Usually only 3-4 players in the 3rd round, max, become good or better. And after round 3, fuggetaboutit. 4th round onward is when you start looking for blocking FBs/blocking TEs/special teams guys. Anybody who was a 4th round or later pick who succeeded was only "good" because of the scheme, with the exception of guys who fell because of injury or off field concerns (earlier round talents).

Did i miss their visits with Smith or Edmunds?

They've also met with Rashaan Evans.

He's not a replacement, he's a compliment. Or a replacement, if Reuben continues being a moron. If that's the case, then a replacement is needed. If not, you have a black version of Lambert/Ham 2, or something along those lines.

Recently there has been a lot of talk that Roquan could go to Indianapolis and not even be there for us.

Still think they have too many other needs to go LB that early. If you expect at least 3 QB's to go in the Top 5 then that means that one of Chubb, Barkley, or Nelson will definitely be there for Indy.

No way Indy goes Roquan with Chubb, Barkley and Nelson still on the board.

I think it is almost 100% that Chubb, Barkley and Nelson wont all be there for Indy at 6.

I think Nelson makes it to them.

I think there is a slim chance both Nelson and Barkley are there for them. Nelson being the most likely.

I think they draft Edmunds though.

I bet 4 of the first 6 picks are a qb
Rosen is the wild card, if Elways passes on him then the Colts could trade back, but if the Colts pick then he slides to 9 and we have a huge trade down opportunity (assuming CHI or TB don't trade down)...
I'm starting to cool on Roquan, hard to get excited about a LB that can't take on block. I realize his game is meant to avoid blockers, but it's hard to overlook how he gets obliterated whenever they do get to him. If the 49ers do take a LB at #9 Edmunds upside may be the way to go. Hard to believe Edmunds is only 19 years old.

Both Smith and Edmunds are best suited to play the weakside. Edmunds loses sight of the ball way too easily and pursues in the wrong direction too often, giving up big plays in the process. He isn't great at taking on blocks either despite his size.

The strength of both is their coverage ability. They both need to be kept clean to simply worry about pursuing the football without getting caught up in the trash.

So much for worrying about where Roquan plays. It doesn't look like Reuben is going to be on a football field anytime soon.
Now we need a guy like him, dumb ass Reuben.

Agree LB is a need. But not sure we need to take one top 10.

This.

Get Roquan and move on from Foster. Don't let him hold you hostage.

If you want a future superstar you take him early, if you're just looking for a solid player, wait a round or 2.

I agree. But why at LB? Can get a "future superstar" at another position too.

If you need someone that can have an immediate impact it's hard to look much further than Roquan though.

Difference is Edmunds is only 19, and it may be the case where he just hasnt been coached very well or have enough experience up to this point. In the NFL his instincts and reads will get wayy better.
