Roquan Smith, LB, Georgia

the Zone says Smith is the best LB..then i hear Edmunds is the guy and most of the mocks i've seen before had edmunds as are pick?

Baldinger really likes edmunds and i feel his opinion is pretty good.

So whats the knock on the 6'5'' Edmunds ?

I'll sum up the prevailing critiques. Some view Edmunds to be lacking instincts. Others view Roquan to be capped as a player with limited upside. Saved you 300 pages.

Cosell did a good job of breaking down his pros and cons.

Listening to Cosell now from the link previously posted

Edmunds sounds like a huge ?. with all the questions about him..how can this guy receive a 1st round projection player ?

Because he's 6'5", 255 and moves like a gazelle.

If Edmunds was the same size as Roquan, we'd be talking about day 2/day 3 player.

Huge upside, tremendous athleticism and size, very good in man coverage especially, good character and intangibles. Comes from a very good background, he's not a knucklehead and most likely won't have any off the field issues down the road.

On the downside he just has really questionable football instincts. He's the opposite of Chris Borland, has the size, has the athleticism but he's often a tick or two short on plays due to his lack of instincts, gets fooled by misdirection and playaction more often than you would like. Had a bad habit of disappearing for large periods of time.

If you're a team drafting him early then you believe that your coaching staff can improve his response time, can make him more disciplined and develop him into a more consistent player, that he could potentially contribute as a pass rusher down the road as well. He's only 19 after all.

If you pass on him then you believe that he's not worthy of that high of a slot and that perhaps he'll never be anymore than what he is currently, a tremendous, freakish athlete who doesn't process things too well out on the football field.

Sound like a huge project to take at 9.. Thanks for reassuring me if we pick Smith
How's his pass coverage? Will he being lots of that as a niner?

He's outstanding in coverage, terrific sideline to sideline speed, both he and Edmunds cover more like defensive backs than linebackers.

Thanks! With the QBs we'll be facing, it definitely helps!

The best case for Niners here is if the NYG go QB and Smith goes to Indy. That very likely pushes one of Barkley, Chubb or Nelson to the Niners. Would be an incredible coup.

It all tips off with Cleveland, word is that NY would surely pick Darnold if he's available @ 2 so Cleveland needs to go Allen @ 1.

I'll add to Phoenix's excellent breakdown. If you put him at Sam, which is what he is, you need to pair him with a Mike who has excellent instincts and can cover for him when he makes a mistake. Edmunds is prone to making a boo-boo here and there, some that have been catastrophic in games.

Agreed. Cleveland must draft to Allen. Just do it.

I read a "report" that they're seriously considering Baker w the first pick.
Both Smith and Edmunds have their flaws. Edmunds is younger so some of it can be attributed to youth.

I seen videos where people have made points on both. Smith needs to be protected if he plays the middle/mike, in the old system that is what the DL did for the linebackers. Otherwise he will get swallowed up and tossed aside. He has good side line to sideline range is a 3 down player, good in coverage. Just that you have to protect him. The 49ers DL are more attacking under Saleh.

Edmunds instinct is not as good, but he is stronger than Smith, bigger than Smith and he does need protecting. However, his instincts are not as good and will step up to quickly and bite, if the play is up the middle that is okay, but when it is not, because he reacted to soon he becomes useless if it is to the outside or a pass etc, sometimes his stepping up too soon is okay and he gets away with making a play. Or sometimes he is too quick to pursue and keys on the RB too much. His pass coverage is great and because of his size and length can cause problems for the qb and receivers. Fast enough to cover receivers. The added upside is that he also has the potential to be a LEO and rush the passer, but that has never been fully utilized or explored.Again, with his speed, physical build it makes him ideal as a pass rusher, whether on the edge or up the middle as the mike, where OL will be occupied with Solomon and Buckner.

If you are looking for a Mike, I think Edmunds is better, not to mention he can be a matchup problem because you can move him around on a passing downs.
