I don't foresee this team having the opportunity to grab a tackle early in the draft in the coming years. Grab that your tackle if you can now and stabilize the most important position on the OL for years to come.
Riddled? He had a tumor on the back of his head. He's had a yr to recover. Go listen to kyle talk about him.
Not ever player needs to be a guy for the next 10 yrs and we actually know he's a top 5 LT in the NFL.
32 isn't that old, there's still three to four years of good football in Trent Williams.

The MM post concerns me. If anyone has followed MM closely over the years, he calls himself the insider...simply because the FO uses him. You have to read the tea leaves with him but it's usually not hard to figure out.
This will be a very abnormal off season for Joe Staley and the longer he's away from football, the harder it will be to come back esp. with how crushed he was in losing the Superbowl. Family will become more important than ever the longer he's home with them.
I think that 50/50 needs to be taken very seriously. It could be real inside information that the FO is also preparing the fan base for an OL at 13 and not the overwhelming favorite of WR.
Chris Simms, Barrows, etc. also throwing shade at Jeudy (also, the most picked by fans and media pundits).
I'm just saying...prepare your anus for a very unsexy pick at 13.

You don't think the down talk is a ploy to keep other teams guessing or are you just gonna let them think, yes we are keyed onto one position? Not sure why all of a sudden everyone believes MM when John Lynch said it himself at the Combine that he doesn't think Staley will retire. And even Staley himself said he's gonna play out his contract.
"No, I'm signed and under contract here," responded Staley, whose two-year extension through 2021 was announced by 49ers CEO Jed York at the State of the Franchise event in June.
"I still love playing football," Staley added. "It's like the ninth time someone's asked me (about retirement). I'm starting to wonder why."

A lot has happened since the combine esp. with these older players. He may have seen how little the FO did this off season and like us, wonders if they've done enough to get to another Superbowl. Maybe he's waiting on the draft. If we do draft a T, he's out.
What you need to pay attention to is the timing of this report. Right before the draft. His reports like these are always calculated.
And he's in no position to effect the draft. His job is to prepare the fan base for what's about to come.

Of course I pay attention to the timing of the report, especially MM's and Simms just recently. They both say smoke screen all over them. And so just disregard what Lynch said at the Combine then and just straight take it from MM that Staley is gonna retire? Look at who are reporting these two rumors, Simms who's one of Shanahan's closest friends and MM who is a reporter FOR the 9ers.
So how about Matt Miller's report, he doesn't work for or with the 9ers and isn't one of Shanahan's closest friends and he has a pretty good track record on the 9ers drafts.
And FWIW, the 9ers have had interviews with two OT's (Josh Jones and Ezra Cleveland) that should be there in the late 1st or early 2nd. And I'm pretty sure this was after they traded for Buckner.

I want us to draft Thomas at 13, but I could see this being a smokescreen. We're still heavy favorites to draft a WR at 13. The front office may be spreading the idea that we'd look at tackles at 13 to incentivize teams like the Bucs and Dolphins to trade up.
Their best case scenario may be trading back from 13 and still picking up one of the top 3-4 WRs.

MM doesn't do that. That's my point. When he gives the fan base hints like we'll resign Ward, heed his message.
But yeah, Simms...fair assessment. You never know. He was asked that direct question if he was trying to throw Kyle a bone there. That was funny.

He's the one OT id want at 13 and he's never played LT.

- NFL Pick 'em
I really want a #1 WR (finally), but if there was a year to pass on WR for an OT this is probably it. I really wanted them to take an OT last year in the 2nd, (but glad they took Deebo). Last year I was hoping they could play an OT at RG for a year or two and then slide the out to OT later.
I guess the real question for me comes down to which group is stronger:
Staley (or vet replacement is he retires), McGlinchy, Tomlinson, Richburg (?), Skule, Garland, Brunskil, AND 31st or 2nd round pick (trade back)
OR
Deebo, Boorne, Pettis, Taylor (?), Hurd (?), AND 31st or 2nd round pick (trade back)

I think he'll be back but with all the orders right after the combine, the longer this goes on, I can see why MM would report that (or was asked too). I predicted 6-18 months from day 1. The old vet needs his regular football routines to get ready for the season in order to tune up and stay healthy. If he finds himself just not motivated solo at home, the thought of retiring creeps more into your mind.
MM's "hinted" at a number of things right before it happened...Ward, Buckner and now this most recently.
As a veteran too who so badly wants to win, would you feel this FO made those off season moves to win it this time?

I feel SF has one of the best teams in football. Joe signed a new contract when he didn't have to if he thought last yr was gonna be his last. Also these guys aren't just sitting on the couch right now.
