Exactly the point I've been making. It seems so easy to fans to maximize a player like Simmons, but it's actually not. In fact, it's very, very difficult.
Unless your name is Belichick. He would be f'n scary in the Pats D.
I'm much more worried they will beef up the oline and give midget 2.0 time. I'm not a draft guru or anything like that but isn't Simmons just a better version of Reddick? That guy went at 13 to the Cards and never did much.
He might be a better version of Derwin James.
Haven't watched a lot of Simmons, does he have that natural instinct James has or is he just an uber athlete?
.
I guess I just dont see it. Seems like he hangs back then uses his speed to fly in and make a play. Amazing speed and athleticism, doesn't look decisive enough to be a Derwin guy at the pro level. I dont think I saw him take on a single offensive lineman in those highlights which would be a concern. Can he shed blocks from NFL lineman?

Well that's why DC's get paid millions to figure it the f**k out. How difficult is it to plug him in as a box safety or linebacker and see which spot he plays better. Or move him around as a Rover, blitz him from inside and out, give him assignments based on teams and matchups.
I'd say Simmons is a great fit in Tartts role in this defense
That's where I'd plug him in if the 49ers drafted him. He'd be a strong safety in this scheme.
John Middlekauff said there's a chance he's available at 13. He said the NFL isn't as high on Simmons as the media is.
It's funny that I've been playing devil's advocate with Simmons because this is the type of player I salivate over. I guess it reflects my lack of faith in Saleh more than Simmons(not that I hate Saleh).
I agree with qyou here. In our scheme, Tartts role would maximize him most. Man I hope the Tards don't get him, nightmare for Kittle

No one thought Derwin James was going to be who he ended up being or wouldn't of lasted to pick 17.

No doubt. For Simmons I think being an All Pro or bust may just come down to who drafts him and how he is used.

That's why I think he's a natural safety than a LB. Would even be nice as a cover 3 corner.
Pretty much everyone has Okudah going to Detroit at 3 if they don't trade down, but Simmons would be perfect for Matt Patricia's defense. Stop the run on 1st, Cover a TE on 2nd, Rush the QB on 3rd. If they do trade down and NYG don't take Simmons I think he is still there pick.
Here's something Niner fans have to understand...after the 2020 season, none of our secondary starters are under contract. Let's say Simmons drops in Lynch's lap...and he takes him. Then takes CB Terrell with #31. Potentially half of our current secondary could already be signed for the next 4 years, with an opportunity for 5 yrs. That said, it's no secret Lynch & Coach want & need some picks in rds 2-4...they have to execute some trades either before or during the draft. It'll be interesting to see how they navigate tonight...can't wait.

They should be running to the podium if Simmons is there. IDGAF about the rest of the receivers at that point.
