Who cares? If the roster is good around a rookie QB I see no reason why they can't win?

Jimmy came in and won 5 straight not knowing a single thing about this offense. Following yr played 2 in a half games. It's not like he was seasoned vet with a bunch of games under his belt.

The NFL is heading in a different direction, these young QBs can play. Look at Hurts right now. Herbert and Burrow. They're weren't close to the reason for them losing...bad coaching and or a bad roster around them.

NYN Why you coming off so amped up, man? I get what you're saying, but you need to consider where I'm coming from and that I'm not looking at it through my own lens. I'm looking at it as best I can through their eyeballs and the way they tend to do things. Could that change? Sure. But historically, they've been very predictable when it comes to how we expect them to handle certain things.

I'm not saying it's impossible. I'm not even saying it's not a viable option. To be very clear, I'm saying that -- knowing what I know about Lynch and Shanny -- it would really surprise me. They have been crazy about money-balling this team together, so the most likely scenario seems to be keeping Jimmy and making low budget bandaids + draft picks in other areas for 2021.

The other viable option is to go with a hotshot rookie in round 1, and then use all the money and draft picks to HEAVILY boost his supporting cast. Get him OL help, get him another WR, another playmaking RB, and boost that defense as much as you possibly can within reason of the budget. I am not truly opposed to either decision, but we need to do it right, whatever we choose.

Indeed. Young QBs coming in are much more prepared than in years past and their immediate success shows that. If Shanahan wants to win he needs to draft a top prospect. Having a rookie start for this team wouldn't be the end of our SB window, it would be the opening of a new one imo. The neglect of the QB position, IOL, and secondary will come to haunt us eventually.

As much as I would love Zach Wilson or Trey Lance, I have to agree with this from the JL/KS perspective. Especially for Trey Lance who I think would be a GREAT fit with Shanny's offense when seeing the concepts he ran at NDSU. I think Trey Lance will be everything people thought/hoped Carson Wentz would be (big arm, prototype body, smart, "leader", more athletic, etc)

But given how raw Trey Lance is -- and Zach Wilson too in terms of dealing with pocket pressure -- I can't see JL / KS rolling into 2021 without a solid veteran in front of them. I think JL / KS want to compete... But how many solid veteran starter options are there? The ones that might come free are going to eat up a good chunk of cap space OR some draft compensation (Stafford, Dak, Darnold, Ryan, etc).

And the 49ers aren't flush rich with either, can we really see JL / KS use up a 1st round pick PLUS $10-20m on QBs? Doesn't leave a lot of bullets for upgrading CB, EDGE, IOL, S, etc

The scenario I'm praying for is Stafford or Dak somehow shake loose due to the situations, and we can cut Jimmy G and swap his ~$25m cap hit for one of them. Then swap cap space with pay cuts/releasing Ford, Richburg, AA to upgrade the C position in FA... then use our bullets in the draft to really upgrade CB, EDGE, G, and S.

Would be great if we had money, but at this point, we're likely going to have to draft our way out of this hole.

plenty of money if Jimmy is gone...throw in Gould/Richburg and a Tomlinson extension you're looking at almost $60M in cap space for 2021.

Ford June-1st cut pays for Warner (and then some). Before resigning/upgrades they're gonna have around $120M in cap space in 2022.

Rookie QB resets the cap massively and allows for other positions to have higher quality talent.

I'm not so sure. While the rookie will make obvious mistakes, they will likely also have the arm talent that Mullens lacks, pocket presence that Beathard lacks, and escapability that JG lacks. I can see a rookie QB having high INT numbers, but also some major wow plays that have been lacking around here.

The Chargers says hi! How did that work out for them. Good to great team built with a hot shot rookie QB.

It's not like Jimmy and Co. don't already have those high INTs anyway lol. At least there's upside, youth, and he's cheap.

Horrible OL, injured defense, and bad HC.

The next guy getting that job is gonna be a happy man once they get healthy.

Not too mention JG's contract becomes guaranteed BEFORE the draft. So the likelihood of us letting Jimmy walk without knowing what we are getting in the draft doesn't seem like something our front office would do.

So Jimmy most likely will be on the team at the very least though training camp one would think

I wouldn't call what I said as amped up

I just don't see what we've had at QB vs what kyle would do with a rookie QB as much of a downgrade.

All you can hope for is making the playoffs in the NFL after that it's anyone's game on any given Sunday.

When does it actually become full gtd? I have yet to find a actual date anywhere...At this point he's has almost zero gtd cash left.

I found this from PFT about 2020...

"In 2020, the Niners can get out from under the deal if they so choose. None of Garoppolo's salary is guaranteed until April 1, and if he's released prior to June 1, the move would save the Niners $22.4 million in cap space"

I expect it to be something similar to that.

Yea last 2 years were April 1st as well. I just assumed April 1st this year as well

Correct and they can release him by June 1st and still save a ton of cash if it's the same setup as this past season.

So you blame Justin Herbert for taking a team that finished 5-11 last year to a record of ::checks notes:: 5-9 this year? An offense that was 21st in points last year to currently ranked 20th in points this year? A defense that went from 14th last year to 25th this year. Yeah....that damn hot shot rookie QB dashing the Chargers Super Bowl hopes.

I'm even more convinced we should take a hot shot rookie QB now.
