There's no weakness to him that can't be fixed if he's dedicated his life to the game. But the 49ers have to be completely confident in that. I mean not even the slightest doubt in their mind can be present. Trey Lance is the type of prospect GMs dream of drafting at the top of the draft. His tools are elite across the board. This is Josh Allen-lite. If he lives for football, draft him. If there's even the slightest bit of doubt, pass and move on.

This is a Barry Bonds-level swing for the fences, and I'm here for it.

And when you give up what we did to pick #3, that's exactly what you do, you swing for the fences for an ELITE prospect. You don't trade up for "he fits my system best and I can win with him".

All of this. IMO you go for a player that can potentially give you a dynasty and not Matt Ryan/Kirk cousins lvl player.
All I can think when looking at this clip is that there's wide open RB who has around 10 yards of green grass around him on the checkdown. I know that's not the point of the clip, but nonetheless.

I agree but I think we sell Ryan short. He was a league MVP and a defensive collapse away from a SB (albeit he missed a play or two, sound familiar?) Ryan was a much better prospect than Mac IMO.

If his first read is open, why check down?

Exactly my thoughts. That's a play that would have Shanny throwing a tantrum on the sideline had he checked down, like he did with Jimmy

Because the difficulty degree of the throw was incomparable. The result was incomplete, and a successful checkdown there gains at least 15 yards, maybe 30-35 if the WR throws a good block or if RB breaks the tackle

What the hell does that mean?!?!?!?

So another self loving bicep kissing mf is tha what it means? Pass if that's the case.. rather have a film room junkie instead.

I don't know why you would think that. Trey sounds humble in interviews and has had coaches raving about him.

It simply means he controls and leads a room and everyone looks up to him.

How many 19 year old kids run their own install meetings?
Shanny and Andy Reid are two coaches i would trust to get the most out Lance. The way they are able to script up plays for QB's is unmatched. Give Lance one year to sit behind Jimmy and learn, and Shanny next off-season to tailor a playbook for Lance's skill set...

I suspect that whichever QB Shanahan drafts is going to have his ASS ridden DAILY about film and study. A veteran might be able to do what he wants to an extent, but whichever rookie this is will be forced to put his nose to the ground and grind. No way Shanahan lets any of these guys off easy.

But that's assuming any of them need it. Whatever Lance did in college in terms of film study, if it wasn't to the level of Jones (who is obsessed with it), I'm willing to bet Lance will adopt a similar disposition.

First, he's going to be riding pine behind Jimmy, and if he wants to see the field, he's going to have to prove to Shanahan that he has the offense and film study down. Second, he's going to be under tremendous pressure to elevate his game, including his film study habits (assuming they aren't up to that level; they may or may not be). Third, again, the coaches will not let him get away with spending all his time in the weight room and not the vast majority of it in the film room.
But again, I don't think it's necessary. Lance appears to want to be great, and only a complete fool would question a coach like Shanahan about what that takes.

With all the interviews I have seen from top five QBs this year, I love this kid's humble predisposition or the way he presents himself to the media. He is professional looking, not a lot of that animated movements, personal accoutrements, and extra distractions to the viewer. I like a guy to be like Jimmy who does not try to attract too much attention to himself by being too stylish/flashy and with self-confidence that does not come from or affected by outside influences.

Agree, this guy could be a top 10 RB and top 10 Arm strength and accuracy all by himself. If there ever was another Steve Young 2.0 -- he would look like Trey Lance.

I think he'll be ok as long as he doesn't date Nessa 2.0

If they're really sticking to their words and keep Jimmy G. Then Trey Lance makes the most sense.

God I hope so. If it turns out to be Mac Jones, I would be massively disappointed.

Totally agree. He is the most raw of the three as well as the most physically talented. If you put Tom Brady's brain in Trey's body, I think you have double the super bowls that Tom has currently. Add in Kyle's offensive genius (getting undrafted Rb's and WR's to play NFL starter caliber play) and you draft top of the line defense every year of Trey's tenure. (use every first round pick every year on an elite edge rusher or defensive back) and draft 3rd round and lower offensive weapons - with Trey's arm and Legs, you got a dynasty.

Key is whether you can develop Trey's intangibles to the level of a hall of fame QB like Tom. That's the risk to this gamble.
