Not the best pundits, but......

Accordingly, both ESPN's Jeremiah and Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio have reported that the 49ers have recently engaged in multiple Zoom meetings with Trey Lance.

Eww Florio but thanks. I said this in other threads but I doubt a lot of guys have legitimate sources of what's going on in the draft room. I mean zoom meetings will go out and Kyle acknowledged that so this is probably true. I think they seen his film and didn't go to his pro day cause they do really like him now I think they just wanna know him as a person cause he is an unknown cause of where he played and a lack of a national spot light.

It was also reported on Chris Biderman's pod Candlestick Chronicles that was posted today.
Lance I think is the better prospect than Fields (and the best overall). Proceed to crucify, but this is why:

About 9 minutes in.

I've seen Lance apparently fail to see the short guy a number of times (usually a hot route, but sometimes a wide open FB on a boot), and throw into coverage deep. But it's entirely possible he just can't resist the deep ball. But I've not seen him fail to see wide open touchdowns as much as Fields.

It could be a lot of things. Maybe scheme. Maybe I just haven't watched enough. Maybe it's that he has too few attempts to show it. But I haven't really seen Lance leave wide open touchdowns on the field all that much. Every QB does it, but some more than others, and Lance less than Fields I think.

And of course, Lance can clearly work within the structure of a pro-style offense, and he's younger and more of a blank slate.

The longer we keep Jimmy the more obvious it is. Can't pass on a prodigy
I wouldn't freak out if it was Lance at #3. But i kinda feel like you are hoping in a season or two Lance gets to where Fields is right now. And then you hope he makes another leap after that. I think Fields is the safer bet right now.

I agree that Fields is probably a safer pick than Lance. He just has more games under his belt. Lance looks like a guy that would have been a #1 consideration if he had at least one more full season . Missing all last season leaves a big question mark but he has the look of a player that could be great in 2 or 3 years, similar to how Josh Allen improved each year. I'll be okay with either one of them but Jones would be a big letdown. In 2 or 3 years. I think we'll be saying they blew it when they didn't take Fields or Lance after giving up all that draft capital.
Trey the name means "three" which is how many 1st round picks it took to get him

Interesting. I wonder how many meetings they've had with the other guys? And I wonder how many of those meetings came before the Niners pulled the trigger on that big trade?

Putting myself in Shanahan's shoes, I know I would like to meet with the potential trade-up target before going all-in to get him.

Lance has the least amount of tape on him so i wouldnt put too much stock on more meetings when it comes to Lance

That makes sense. Between the two, Lance is a quicker twitch athlete and physically I can see that being very attractive to Shanny. Mentally, this kid has done what no other QB in the class has In breaking down film, making cut ups, leading the game plan and calling out all the protections pre snap. Another thing I Shanny will love. I love both Fields and Lance
One thing I'm concerned about is when he runs he likes to run through people. We love it when kittle and deebo does it but seeing a franchise qb attempt that against nfl athletes makes me a little nervous. Hoping he learns to slide.

He probably only does it as he's the strongest player on the field at FCS level. I'm sure that'll get cleaned up in the pros.

If I were his coach I'd say end zone or playoff/4th quarter 3rd downs only.

And "Lance" is a weapon of war which we will use to devastate our enemy leaving a trail of broken vanquished adversaries behind us!

It was meant to be.
