I've seen Lance apparently fail to see the short guy a number of times (usually a hot route, but sometimes a wide open FB on a boot), and throw into coverage deep. But it's entirely possible he just can't resist the deep ball. But I've not seen him fail to see wide open touchdowns as much as Fields.
It could be a lot of things. Maybe scheme. Maybe I just haven't watched enough. Maybe it's that he has too few attempts to show it. But I haven't really seen Lance leave wide open touchdowns on the field all that much. Every QB does it, but some more than others, and Lance less than Fields I think.
And of course, Lance can clearly work within the structure of a pro-style offense, and he's younger and more of a blank slate.
Here's a game where he costs NDSU multiple touchdown scores by missing wide open receivers, with the drives ending in FGs

Perhaps Mac Jones completes a 5% higher rate in 2022.
That means out of 400 attempts a year = 20 more completions per year = ~200 extra passing yards per year.
However a Trey Lance would add:
* Additional 500+ rushing yards (to more than offset any decrease in passing)
* Greater Durability = much less likely to be injured (very important, as they found out with Garopolo)
* QB runs open up the field for more variety of play calling to keep defense off balance
* Adds diversity so they can't call us "racist"! j/k
Plus Lance is 2 years younger than Mac and is still growing and improving both mentally and physically.
He grew an inch last year and is now over 6'4" (and also gaining athleticism)
Smart = had offers from Ivy League schools
Only 20 y/o, loves to study film, quick learner = likely to improve enormously with time (high ceiling)
Already has good field vision and good feel, but with some time he will very likely greatly improve his vision, accuracy and passing

He didn't grow an inch, they just decided to list 6'3 and 3/8ths as 6'4 instead of 6'3.

is it me or does Greg cosell love Trey Lance? Every time I listen to him talk about these QBs when Lance gets brought up it's glowing stuff...he was talking about Jones and someone brought up Jones to SF and he brought up Lance and how he's such a scheme fit in SF.

Nope. Nope. I just don't trust his accuracy. I'm completely glued to the Fields bandwagon now. Lance definitely has uber potential, but the game film just … can't do it.
Edit: Perhaps I should use different language. He is accurate on some of his throws. I think it's his consistency that looks worrisome to my eyes.

I mentioned this earlier but I'll throw it out there again...They've had multiple meetings with him.

His ceiling is John Elway+. Kid has the biggest arm of this draft and runs with elusive power and speed.

We're basing his consistency with year old game film when he was 19 years old. Not to dump on NDST but their coaching while good for the level of play they face is by no means NFL level and he could see a massive amount of growth with professional coaching.

Do we know if they've done that with other QBs too?
given he had a year off wonder if they'd contacted him throughout the year to see his development

Man - the more I watch Trey Lance videos on youtube - the more I like him for this team. Between Wilson, Fields, and Lance - I'd be more than happy with either one of them but if Jimmy really will be on the roster for 2021 season - Trey Lance makes a LOT of sense.

I'll stick with Lance as my prediction in regards to the trade up. Unless something strange happens with Wilson getting past the Jets, I believe Trey is the target.
