John Elway is the superstar comp for Lance's upside. So it all depends on how favorable the Shanahans would value a QB with Elway traits.

If what Greg Cosell said aligns with Shanny's mindset, it does seem as though he's taking Lance if Wilson isn't available. The fact that they also plan on keeping Jimmy G (barring an egregious offer for an injury prone player) makes this pick plausible.
Not sure who else Shanny and Co. had multiple meetings with but that might be another clue of where his mindset is at.

I think his upside is higher than Elway.

So much this. Elway was the slam dunk #1 in what was, and still is the best QB class of all time, in 1983. Just by physical tools, Lance may be as mobile as Elway, but he didn't have the arm....and you can arguably say that nobody in the NFL today has the arm that Elway had. He truly was a freak coming out of Stanford.

David Lombardi thinks Trey Lance is who Kyle is leaning towards. Makes the Josh Allen comparison, how Kyle saw first hand how Allen tore them up. He can also sit for two years behind Jimmy.

I think the Pick will be Lance based on them calling Jimmy immediately and pretty much telling him he is still their starter. That tells me the guy they are drafting won't be ready in 2021. That screams Trey Lance. And when I heard the Niners traded up to 3 I immediately thought ok they are trading up for Fields or Lance. But keeping Jimmy and not willing to trade him unless blown away by an offer had me swayed in Lance's direction. How the heck Mac Jones ended up as a possibility baffles me.

No one under the age of forty understands what Elway was. Best qb prospect ever probably. And then went on to live up to the hype. Great player. No Joe Montana though

The #3 overall pick is not sitting for 2 seasons unless Jimmy wins a Superbowl next year.

Lance is my favorite guy in this draft outside of Lawrence. I'd give up a couple more first rounders for Lawrence. But Lance has an easy recent comp in Wentz. That system they run there at ndsu had Wentz ready to play right away. Now Lance has less college reps but still everything he practiced in college will directly translate to what he'll do with the niners. And statistically speaking he was better than Wentz. Also a better runner. I really like him, will be super excited if he's the pick

Wentz was on his way to winning league mvp before getting hurt in his second season. Lost his oc and eventually had his worst season last year so the eagles moved on. They still got five years of solid play from him, most of it on a rookie deal. And then cashed out for a third and possible first round pick when they moved on. Not bad, definitely not a bust. And Trey on paper looks like a better prospect. A lot to like about Lance.
