Right. This is why QBs taken in college should have at least 2 full seasons minimum - 3 is ideal. They will be ready to get on the field sooner. These QBs that jump the gun to get to the NFL early so they get paid is a joke.

They should change the rule. Each year you come out early before two full seasons ....is one more year added to your rookie contract

Don't you think that's a bit unfair in Lance's case considering his football season was cancelled this year? He would have your required 2 full seasons if not for COVID.

That's a good point. In Lance's case - he'll be only 21 during this entire season. So, let's say he needs 2 full seasons to be ready. He'll be fully ready to go at age 23. I'll take that.

He's possibly the most moldable talent in the draft at QB as he's already shown all the physical tools to be special in the NFL while displaying an incredible aptitude towards ball security a trait our HC loves. His limited reps and experience may make him a more coachable player to develop into exactly what Kyle wants from his QB.

NO ON TREY LANCE FOR SO MANY REASONS!!!! I can see the talent, and the raw attributes. Looks like a Colin Kaepernick clone. My issues are,
2019 he averaged less than 18 pass attempts per game. In 2020, he had 30 attempts in one game and only completed 15 passes.
He looks big and fast but he's also not playing against NFL talent.
I don't see a lot of tight window anticipation throws. If he is throwing someone open, its in man coverage 1 on 1, or the guy is wide open.
I just don't see how anyone could want Lance over Fields. I even like Mac Jones more than him. I am so confused.
I see the amazing deep ball, but he has a clean pocket on most of those due to how much they run. They literally ran the ball on 70% of the plays. They ran the ball on 719 plays to only 304 pass attempts that season.
This dude is a LONG term DEVELOPMENTAL project. Not who you draft with the 3d overall pick.

Nice!!!
Back the kid, back the coaches.

If they want to take the risk then more power to them.

They've already proven that they have huge cajones
What if an NFL head coach was able to take the top HS recruit and groom him under the coach's offense with that NFL team for 3 years? Would that QB have success when he starts for that team in year 4?

Trey Lance at 3!!!!!

Trey Lance at 3!!!!!

Shea Patterson was a 5 star QB and #4 overall prospect in 2016. He went undrafted in 2020 after a decent college career at Ole Miss and Michigan. Not sure going to the NFL would of changed his outcome.

The majority of your criticisms are actually criticisms of NDSU's playbook. Which they used to go undefeated and win a National Championship.

Also it's fine to like Fields over Lance, I have them pretty much equal, but Jones played on one of the most talented offenses ever so if Lance was throwing to wide open guys then Jones was throwing to wide open guys with no pressure. Like ever. Seriously on his tape it looks like the offensive and defensive lines don't even exist on the majority of the plays.
Snippets from scouts.
I've said that from day 1, it was Wilson, then Lance, then Fields, then Jones. I recognize the gamble here. But with Jimmy and our team, we offer a start condition like Big Ben got in Pittsburgh. You don't have to put too much on his shoulders, but his size and athleticism can make up for some of that learning curve.
"He's not going to be ready to play. He has to get in early, stay late and take a ton of notes just so he can learn the NFL position."
"He is the most instinctual quarterback in this draft. I watched him and thought, 'There's no way he's only played 17 games as a starter.'"
"The stuff he does in the pocket is so unique, a Dan Marino-type guy. Either everything comes so naturally for him or he has the best coach in college football."
"He feels traffic from either side. He has a knack for stepping up, sliding left, sliding right. He doesn't raise it or drop it."
"He's so young physically and mentally at the position. But his upside is tremendous."
"He's 6-4. He'll be 240-245 when he grows into his body."
"When all is said and done, he can be as good or better than (Trevor) Lawrence. He's going to be a big, physical quarterback like Ben Roethlisberger."
"He's more of a thrower than a passer. He's like a pitcher who's only throwing 95 mph fastballs."
"What they (the 49ers) should do is take Trey Lance because of the upside. He has the kind of things you want to work with."
"He's developmental. It's going to take some time to get him ready."
"He hasn't played a ton of football, but he is a quarterback. He knows how to play the position. He could be the guy."

All of this.... I'm ok with Fields because he intrigues me too. I'd be disappointed with Jones (and ecstatic with Wilson). But the QB that makes the most sense for us is Fields.
