How many college QBs are going through multiple reads? Not many at all...it's a TON of half reads, RPOs, scramble/extend a play rinse and repeat.
Any smart OC/HC will use what he's good at yr 1 and develop him...talent is there no doubt. How smart is he? Can he learn coverages/defenses? Just he nuances of playing QB.

I see Lance as a boom or bust prospect.
If Lance plays right away I can see his coach featuring his legs in the system a lot the first 2 years while the kid improves with his arm the same way the Ravens are doing with Lamar.
After those 2 years if Lance doesn´t improve his throwing ability (full-field reads, 2nd and 3rd options, tight windows) he is gonna be a bust. On the other hand if he can turn into an accurate passer he is gonna be a boom.
The main difference I see between Lance and Wilson is that Wilson seems to be ready to play right away (sort of) with his arm as his best weapon while Lance is going to need his legs way more.
I don´t know if Shanahan will want to take that bet on Lance.
I'd feel most comfortable with Lance if he sat for a year. You could use him as a gadget player at times the way Harbaugh used Kaepernick as a rookie. Put him into the game on short yardage situations, utilize some RPO's and give him some opportunities to boost his confidence and make plays while studying the offense and further developing his mechanics overall.
I always liked the way I heard about how Walsh developed Montana. Actually sat for 1.5 years before he was inserted in as the starter. Just very slowly easing him into the offense. If Jimmy can hold him off based on his play (see Brett Favre with Aaron Rodgers) than so be it. But we shouldn't rush it. I'd also like Nick Mullens having a hand in this or even a QB like Brian Hoyer (if he isn't under contract). I remember the report of how Mullens would practice alone running the play calls from the game that day/week. Resources are going have to be poured into getting him mentally ready. Who knows where we could've been had we taken that approach with Kap.

And they don't see CJ Beathard, who IMO was way over drafted.
Right, Beathard was day 3 prospect who was a developmental QB...possible LT backup. I think people are so dramatic when they bring him up regarding how Kyle evaluates QBs (not saying you are).
I mean do people think when Andy Reid drafted Aaron Murray or Mike Kafka on day 3 it was with the intention of them being the franchise QB? Nah, just developing QBs...should always be doing that
If their intentions are to have Mac Jones being the long-term stud FQB, then you don't trade back. The position is just too important.
Agreed. If you believe a guy can be the guy, just get him.

OL overhaul isn't the salve many seem to think it will be. Its a structural issue in football nowadays. The top talent, the top athletes are winding up on the DL. The guys coming out playing DL are simply better than the OL's that are coming out. The end result of that is more than ever you need QB's that are able to move efficiently, to climb the pocket, sidestep pressure, throw on the run and simply be able to act as an equalizer when you know the four guys across from you are all more talented than whoever you might have blocking for you.
This is a very interesting topic. Middlekauff(former NFL scout) referenced this during a discussion explaining why the CB play in the NFL is awful, and why we haven't seen a true shutdown corner since Darelle Revis. He talked about how all the top athletes are being funneled to and staying with WR because of how WR-friendly offenses and the league is nowadays, whereas in the past if a dude struggled to run routes or catch he was guaranteed to switch to CB.
Very interesting take and does explain a lot. But true shut down corners didn't come around often even back then. We had Deion, Rod Woodson, Champ Bailey, and Revis. Am I missing anyone? That Revis standard is a bit high. If anything it has been awhile because based on that you'd see one or two every 1ers and I don't think we've had one since 2007.

I just want Lance or Wilson. To some extent I can be happy with Jones too... who I admit could be really good.
But we need to fix the offensive line and idk how we do that with Jimmy's contract.
We either ask Jimmy to take a massive pay cut, see if he will agree to a trade, or cut him. We can't roll into 2021 with his contract the way it is.
Use that freed up cash to resign TW, and get some help on the interior, resign juice, Verrett, cheaper vet edge.
Trade up for one of Wilson or Lance. Use all remaining picks on OL/DB/EDGE to develop and contribute.
Jimmy definitely has to take a cut. He should see the writing on the wall. Underperforming and either a flat cat or declining cap. His best opportunity to make money is right here. Also considering what he's made verses the games played.....yeah. The thing that I don't get is the better your team is, the better opportunities you have for making money both in football, outside of football, and post-football. As for help on the interior, is it really possible without spending big bucks? It may sound crazy, but I think if we have Bosa, we are okay at edge. Either we'll have Dee Ford (knock on wood) at a reduced contract or we can resign Ronald Blair, giving us Bosa, Willis (re-sign), Blair, Hyder and throw a rookie into the mix, we should be pretty set. If anything, I do see us getting help at center because even though I want us to draft a C early, I doubt said player starts. Agree with DB help.
