I felt they are taking Mac Jones - were trying to convince themselves and others that they've done all the work and they have come to a very unpopular choice

if that's true then I think Lance wins that...there's hasn't been a sniff of off field issues or Lance as a person. Kid seems perfect from that angle.

I would bet Fields is still in that picture. I doubt he is out of the running. But I could be wrong.

From the press conf. - it looked like Lynch had given up and is gonna let Shanahan pick Mac Jones. That's how I read his body language. Hopefully, I am wrong. The questions didn't help either bc they kept asking fan reaction and they can't really say - yes - we will succumb to fan pressure. But, body language was very defensive imho.

According to Silver:
6) Why Jones? Among other things, the Niners believe he has uncanny pocket skills, especially out of the shotgun formation, and next-level footwork. He can slide in the pocket to either side and react quickly to onrushing defenders, even unblocked ones...
My only rebuttal to that is him being able to react quickly to onrushing defenders especially unblocked ones just means he'll be able to protect himself before he gets sacked.
And I don't have the numbers but the 9ers are probably towards the bottom of the league in using the shotgun formation and since 2017 have run the 3rd most play-action drop backs from under center. Not to mention how many bootlegs Shanahan has and wants to run which again further limits how often a QB is going to be in the pocket.
If Trey Lance is truly the smartest QB in the draft and obviously one of the most physically gifted I'd rather take my chances on that guy over the guy that's great at moving around in the pocket in shotgun formations that aren't a staple of the offense and who'll have the quick reaction time to duck before the guy McGlinchey was supposed to block sacks him.
