The only think that still gives me a little hope that we don't waste this pick and 2 more 1sts on Mac Jones is - Lynch said running draft is in his deal. He defer to Shanahan on QB but Shanahan respects his opinion as well. So, I took that as - Lynch can put his foot down if he really wanted but wants to make decision which Shanahan will agree to as well.

My only rebuttal to that is him being able to react quickly to onrushing defenders especially unblocked ones just means he'll be able to protect himself before he gets sacked.

And I don't have the numbers but the 9ers are probably towards the bottom of the league in using the shotgun formation and since 2017 have run the 3rd most play-action drop backs from under center. Not to mention how many bootlegs Shanahan has and wants to run which again further limits how often a QB is going to be in the pocket.

If Trey Lance is truly the smartest QB in the draft and obviously one of the most physically gifted I'd rather take my chances on that guy over the guy that's great at moving around in the pocket in shotgun formations that aren't a staple of the offense and who'll have the quick reaction time to duck before the guy McGlinchey was supposed to block sacks him.

The whole out of shot gun thing makes it pretty weak sauce.

I agree, coach up Lance and let's roll!

How can somebody who is not athletic be more athletic?? The guy is a statue.

Now go actually watch game film on Jones and come back. Then you'll see that he has excellent pocket instincts, and moves in it extremely well for a rookie, let alone a slow fat one.

Marino was supposedly a statue, but he had deft pocket movement. Jones, of course, is not remotely on Marino's level, but the point is, sometimes slow, slightly pudgy guys can move well in the pocket.

So that's what they mean by, "Most athletic in the pocket."

seems this was pretty clearly a mix up which actually just makes it stupid for a slightly less stupid reason, which is that Mac Jones is certainly not the most intelligent QB of the bunch

So Jones according to one team sour e recalled a play in extreme detail that they gave to him months ago, so why is it so clear that is definitely not the most intelligent, other than the fact that it's a trope that scares every virtue signaler who wants social media likes away?

EDIT — has the quoted person said it was a mix up? Several sources indeed say Lance is highly intelligent, and film clearly shows Jones moves outstanding in the pocket. I would not be surprised one bit if some teams see it this.

I also think it's telling that Jones' pocket movement — arguably the one thing he does best in this class — can't possibly be great because you hate Jones so much.

That's how I viewed it too.

If Kyle don't trust his personnel department, then it will show later that everything will unravel. You can't pick someone because he's good in the pocket alone.
But just like my boss keep saying each time you have a great idea. "The bottom line is, it's my program an my responsibility - so i can do whatever I want."

It really coming down to can they Get Lance up to speed by the first game. Trey said, definitely!
