Lance just seems like a giant gamble and Shanny hasn't shown the ability to groom QB's. An average player vs an unknown…both seem like a giant risk that we shouldn't blow draft capital on. Did it make sense to stay put and not give away the farm?
Every draft pick is a gamble. I think Trey's insane work ethic, intelligence, and elite physical traits makes him less of a gamble. I think that's exactly the kind of player you want to draft.
You def don't want to draft a guy at 3 who doesn't have big potential. That's a recipe for disaster imho. And let's not forget - we are drafting with 3rd overall + 2 future 1sts.
that's pretty much where I stand too.
If you trade 3 picks to basically draft Kirk Cousins 2.0 then all you really did is get cheaper at QB and "maintain" continuity.
If he becomes Matt Ryan 2.0 that's all well but if they are really "trying" to keep Jimmy for a year, imo it would be better if they grab the very high ceiling prospect and let him learn the offense while Jimmy proves his mettle. It's a win-win. Jimmy gets to play with fire in his ass and if he takes us to the playoffs and beyond, we can flip Jimmy for a better draft haul. If Jimmy gets injured, the rookie can run a simplified version of the playbook and ease into it.
It really depends on what they do with Jimmy. I'd prefer to keep him one more year to raise his trade value... If he can prove his health (and consistent play) we can get more than a 1 for him, nevermind if he took us back to the bowl and people come calling with two 1s... and by then the rookie is ready
