Yeah not liking what I see with him. He's got a bit better movement than Kaepernick had, but has the same accuracy issues from what I've watched, and also is mostly a 1 read guy whose highlights are filled with schemed wide open TDs. Plus the competition he plays against is worse than Zach Wilson who this forum is overrating a tad himself.

I know I'll get killed for this, but Mac Jones is the best available option for us. The 2 better QBs in this draft are Lawrence and Fields, and with Fields it's not a big gap between them.

I don't understand the fascination with Mac Jones...what about the history of any Bama QB much less this year of all years where they are clearly ludicrously stacked compared to anyone makes you think he is going to translate well to the NFL. Tua is the best thing to come out of there ever and he is still pretty raw. Drafting a Bama QB now it like drafting a USC QB in the early 2000's...odds are it is a terrible idea.

Or like drafting an Oregon QB after all the enormous busts they've had. Why would anyone take Justin Herbert? They never work out in the NFL.

played in a pro-offense and has elite traits. Phoenix and I have debated that he should or shouldn't sit yr one...in a perfect world he should. I just don't think our other QBs are all that great to begin with.

I will disagree he has accuracy issues (watching the 2019 tape). I put little stock into one game in 2020. I wouldn't say it's "one read" stuff either. I also totally disagree that Wilson wouldn't be a great option for us...he literally does a ton of what Kyle runs already. He brings a ton to the table that none of our current QBs do and guys like Jones (who I do like) don't either.

Because Herbert has some elite skill sets...

So did Harrington and Mariota. The point is that judging a QB by the uniform and not the individual never makes much sense. Its the same stuff that people say about Fields and the "when's the last time an Ohio State QB worked out in the NFL" rhetoric.

Agree in a sense which is why not just as an Ohio State fan but someone who tries indeed to have and use sense, I keep saying that holding the Ohio State standard of QB's to Fields is silly.

But, that isn't an apples to apples comparison in fairness. Herbert, who will still have much to prove in the long term as well, comes after many years of those failed Oregon QB's and many different coaches. Even Mariota is what, 3 coaches ago when it comes to Oregon?

The recent Alabama QB's have all been under the same coach in Saban. Admittedly different OC's of course. But much more continuity and stability overall than at Oregon, USC, or even Ohio State. Although from what I hear too Saban in recent years has focused on actually recruiting and bringing in more talented QB's rather than guys who are almost complementary pieces who can run the offense and other than that stay out of the way other than to make the occasional play or throw when needed.

But I can easier see the reluctance toward taking a Saban Alabama QB than I can some of the other things. Particularly one who wasn't "good enough" to start until his last year there.

Oh I agree with that, but not a chance Mariota had the same arm talent as Herbert. When you're playing in these air raid/spread offenses, it's hard to get a understanding on how the player is with decision making, reading a defense, accuracy etc.

Jones has a leg up there for sure...if I'm going with the spread guy it's because of his skill set and mental makeup...ceiling matters (and so does the team/coaching staff he's going too).

but yeah I agree you don't scout the name on the helmet...people do however like to pick and choose when the team/conference they play for matter with prospects
Really not seeing what some of you are seeing with regards to Lance. Yes, ideally, he has more experience before starting in the NFL, but he has shown to read and understand what the defense is giving him In a scheme that runs a lot of the same concepts that we do here in SF, and his ball placement is fine. I have a hard time believing that the same guy who almost made cj "sack me" Beathard almost serviceable behind a banged up OLine and without his weapons on offense won't be able to mask some of the deficiencies of a guy who is supremely more talented, while he potentially develops into an upper tier NFL quarterback

I know it's been a long time but Bart Starr, Joe Namath and Ken Stabler came out of Alabama so you can't say Tua is the best ever. Talent can be found anywhere so if a coach or GM falls in love with a player then they are going tomtake him. It doesn't matter where he played. Big college or small. FBS or FCS. QB U or LB U.

Ohio State is one of the few big time schools that has never produced an NFL QB . None of the QBs from there have ever done much of anything in the NFL. Fields could be the first. USC QBs haven't had a great NFL history but they were far more successful than OSU. Part of that is the style of play. Ohio State was traditionally a running school and turned out a lot of RBs and linemen. USC and the PAC10/12 has been more wide open with more passing. It's only been the last few years that we've seen OSU open things up.

Yeah because imitating the lone exception in a data set has a really high success rate.

No you judge them by the program they come from, the strength of players around them relative to competition, their measurables, The reason Bama produces busts at QB is because you generally don't have to be that good to do well in their offense and this year more than any it is an even higher risk than usual. The reason people are high on fields is because unlike previous years it is really clear the offense goes through him, he elevates the talent around him. The opposite looks true of Mac Jones...he is a kid who is just asked to not screw it up.

Saban Bama might as well be a whole different school...going back 40 years is hardly relevant, and I never brought up Fields, but if we are going to bring him into it, I would take the risk there before Jones based on level of talent around him and how much he contributes to wins. I really wouldn't be big on either unless they slide to a very palatable draft position. If Fields were to by some miracle make it to 4-5 I would be a player there, But ideally If we were going to move up, I would go with Wilson at around 6-7 and lose less draft capital and if we are going to stand pat I like Lance.

I was just pointing out that you said Tua was the best ever. Ever is a long time and history didn't start in 2000. I would never be afraid of taking a QB based on the school he played at. The only reservations I would have is if he played in the FCS against weaker competition. That's where you really need to see him at the Senior Bowl or at the combine to get a closer look at actual skills.
I think the reason this guy excites me is that he is doing a lot of things we already do and did them well. Albeit vs lesser competition but his potential is huge. I
