Lance may end up being a good QB but how can you mortgage your future and alienate a very good QB to draft a kid who threw less thy 400 college passes against very, very low level competition.
75% chance this kid is the next Akili Smith

Totally disagree.....Lance has an incredible work ethic, is extremely bright, is humble, already reads defenses, and will absolutely work on all of his perceived weaknesses. I think the one quality that sets him apart from other QBs in this draft is his ability to escape the rush. I watched a good amount of his highlight film and the guy is like Russell Wilson in that regard.
Oh and.....he is also way more talented than Akili Smith. You can hate on him all you want and it may take him a year or two, but IMHO, this kid has "success" written all over him.

Cheers!

How can you tell?

Dude has only completed 192 passes his entire college career.

Ill never understand the trade up for this guy.

For all of the reasons that I mentioned. Yes, he is inexperienced but he played the same number of college games as did Mac Jones... In the NFL, the guys that succeed are the ones that love the game, work the hardest (especially on their shortcomings) and....have great talent. Lance has all 3 of those qualities. He is also part of an organization that has a great coaching staff and very good team culture than Lynch and Shanny have built. Of course there are no guarantees but from my perspective, this guy has as much chance to succeed as any QB in this draft. Just sayin'

Cheers!

I hope for Lance and for the 49ers they get him on the bench for the next year or two.

Don't Alex Smith the guy

Hard to say as no QB in NFL draft history has a shorter resume than Lance. 2000 yards passing at a nothing school but with Shanny we'll know he'l.p. reach his ceiling.

Fields dropped some because he immediately locks eyes on the primary, for way to long almost every time. Not saying he won't ball out in Chi town but that will have to get fixed

That's what makes this palatable....

There was no perfect prospect.

I would rather of had Fields at 10 with an extra 1st and Mac at 15 with two extra firsts them what gave up for trey, but our dude who knows QBs got what he wants ...can't argue that.

King Kong balls pick. Straight up. Biggest project in the draft and an even bigger risk with the amount we gave up esp. given how far Mac and Fields fell. If SF doesn't take him, how far would Lance fall? Risky taking a project at QB in the top 10 and one that should be redshirted for a year.

All that said, Kyle kept talking about how mature this young man is, his work ethic, his retention on the white board, etc.

There's no denying his traits.

I very much respect the swing-for-the-fences here but I'd be lying if I didn't think there is massive risk and cost here too. One thing very much concerned me was Kyle's comments on accuracy. He felt you can only improve that with what HE can control and that's his footwork. So that's certainly something to watch.

BTW: What hampered Alex was paralysis by analysis. He had to KNOW everything before he could even function. That probably won't be the case with Trey.

Kick some ass in 2022, kid!

Jimmy is taking us to the playoffs this year. Win-win.

Lance doesnt fall... There were three teams in the 4-7 range who were in on him. One would have bit. You can easily argue that Fields or Mac with no pics traded is the smarter play, but there is no world where Lance got down to where we could pick him up at our original spot. If we wanted Lance all along and wanted to be sure of it, this was the cost.

Not sure if true, but heard the Falcons loved Lance too and were waiting to see who we were taking

i think the broncos were interested in him too.

In one interview I heard him say he had Zoom meetings with about 20 teams. I feel like the Panthers (have they been mentioned?) were interested up until they thought they couldn't get him any more, queue Darnold trade. I also think the Bears and WFT would've been interested in trading up.

We don't know that. That's hyperbole. We said the same about Fields and Mac too and both went around our original 12 pick, outside the top 10. Fields...many expected at least top 4.

I am normally not super confident in draft prognositication but this year the QBs went just about exactly where I thought they would. I told everyone if we had sat still we could of had Fields at 10 and Jones at 14 right from the get go when every one was saying 5 QB's in top ten. I had seen Lance as a really strong candidate for Broncos, Falcons and Panthers. One of them was going to bite as early as 4.

There is no we....this isn't consensus. I am telling you what I saw, not that I am an expert but this time I was absolutely correct in every other move that was made and when around the QB's. Lance wasn't dropping out of top 4-7. If you wanted him for sure you had to get to 3. Even if the Falcons passed the Panthers and Broncos were sniffing around and clearly Cincy and the Fins were willing to shop their spots.

Right, I'm just saying if you're going to say trading up that high for an unathletic QB you better be prepared to say the same about a massive redshirt project esp. when Fields/Mac were proof of going outside the top 10 and both were far more accomplished to date.
