It depends what you're giving up. Texans only trade Watson if he refuses to ever play for them again AND I think they'd want Bosa as well as a boatload of picks.

Lance would be on a rookie deal and has a ceiling just as high, who knows whether he reaches it, or how long it would take though.

I think Lance can sit a year or two behind Jimmy, then start when Jimmy's contract is up, if not sooner.

I agree, I think that's part of the equation of liking Lance, you have to be comfortable with Jimmy at least next year, I am.

It's difficult because I wouldn't want to wait two years, but we may have to. Would love to get some more info on his dedication and work ethic. Sell me that you can learn it in a year.

Yeah, it's going to be tough to learn the offense in a year, but he may be up to it.

Well, Lance is a more realistic pick. If we want Wilson, we might have to move all the way up to #2 overall (that is if the Jets won't take a QB).
If we sit at 12, and have a choice of Lance and Jones....I'm not sure. They offer different things, for sure. Lance higher ceiling, maybe Mac higher floor?

Just not a decision for me, look around the league, the guys teams are trying to replace such as Goff, and the guys taking the league by storm like Mahomes, Allen, Herbert.

People might say Brady, but Mac will never have the arm Brady has at 42, Brees maybe, but again, 40 year old Brees. Talent matters.

That's why I'm going with drafting Lance, he should be there at #12. Wilson is going to take a couple of picks to move up that high.
I think at this point Lance and Jimmy G make the most realistic sense....I just don't know what you do with Jimmy's cap this yr? You can't restructure because you're just creating a massive cap hit in 2022 and Lance should be the starter by then.

Possibly trade Jimmy in a yr (if he plays well) to a team that's willing to give him some sort of extension?

f**king COVID. wouldn't be in this issue if not for this 2020 b******t.

After seeing Allen beat the Ravens, I'm now thinking it might be okay to use their 1st rounder on Lance. Enough with the "safe picks" like Solomon Thomas. Get me BOOM OR BUST. The coaching staff needs confidence in themselves that they can coach up Lance like how Daboll developed Josh Allen.

Garappolo can start for another two years I guess.

Was it really Daboll who developed Allen? Or was it Allen doing his due diligence to work with a QB coach and work on his mechanics, his reads, etc?

The improvement that he took from last year to this one is crazy. Hopefully if Lance is our pick he puts in the work needed to make him the best guy he can be.

Watching his game against James Madison, what the hell is it with Trey Lance and taking so much punishment when he runs? I get he's a big dude but damn...learn to slide man!

I think it's a mentality thing "I'm stronger than you and can lay the wood" I agree that I don't want to see it in the NFL, his teammates love it though. Maybe he can keep it at the Goal line as a comprise.

Ask Cam Newton how that went for him. Its only a matter of time before your body starts to break down from taking on so many big hits. If you're a QB you shouldn't be looking to thump anyone. Slide or get out of bounds, leave that other stuff to the RB's.

I feel the infatuation with the running QB and read/option will end soon. It just doesn't make sense. Sure it has the positive of opening up the offense to another degree. No question. Cam and Lamar have demonstrated that. But with the price of franchise QB's now in the $30MM range, the draft capital often required to get them, the risk-reward just isn't there. Each venture into the open field increases the risk of an injury that could end the season or even a career. There goes a bunch of salary cap and the season up in smoke. Every time the QB assumes the position of call carrier, he is essentially a RB. which take vicious hits and are usually paid less then $5MM for doing so. They are a dime a dozen and cheap. When the QB runs the ball he is essentially now functioning at that paygrade. His asset value to the franchise drops to a fraction of what it is that capacity. It's all about the QB in this league and it will continue to be. Can't afford to have them be RB's as part of the offensive gameplay except under extreme conditions like a close playoff game, etc.

This is a really nice post, I think there's a bit more of a place for it as long as you protect yourself by sliding or going out of bounds.

Also a QB who uses their athleticism to buy time to make throws is ridiculously dangerous, so it isn't dead, but I agree there is a lot of risk (it does help when you're built like Cam, Allen & Lance though)
Strength of schedule is a big deal...even Zach Wilson will be scrutinized on that basis, and rightly so. There are some guys that've played at lower level schools who've gone on to have good NFL careers. Lance could be one of them, or not. I just have a hard time seeing Lynch/Shanahan pulling the trigger on him in the 1st rd. Even if they're able to re-sign Verrett, they'll still need at least one topflight CB in this draft (Surtain or Farley).
How many people are comfortable with Jimmy being around for at the most 2 seasons? If healthy I think he is capable of winning many games for us. Cause if thats what Kyle thinks, I think he would go for Lance if he decided to go QB. Really gotta ease him into quite an advanced offense.

Jimmy for a yr and trade him in 2022, Lance played in a pro-style offense in college...it's not gonna take him 2 yrs to figure it out. You gotta take advantage of those rookie QB contracts and getting Jimmy off the books is part of that.

I can live with a Jimmy/Lance situation. I have and issue with the cap space and what they do in 2021 under this scenario. I also think they will have to move up for Lance as well. I can't see him getting past the Panthers. He's a Rule type of QB.
