It's an opportunity to talk with Clemson coaches about other players besides Lawrence.....especially with the covid lockdowns and such where there will be limitations. Good to see SF being active.

Could also be to make other teams think they're serious about drafting a QB, or even trading up for Lawrence. Or to inflate what they'd get for a trade down.

There are so many reasons to be there that I feel like they'd be fools not to.
NYniner85, you got any games where he avoided pressure and threw accurately off platform from in the pocket? What about extremely tight window passes from inside a congested pocket?
I do love the tear drop deep passes, and that he has pretty good mechanics.
I would like to see him look off defenses and throw from a congested pocket. Have not had an opportunity to dig through it enough to see.

But if I had to categorize him right now based on the limited viewing I've had, I'd say his potential clearly outstrips Jimmy. He seems somewhat robotic to me sometimes, and he doesn't seem like a particularly fast reactor (unlike Jimmy - one of his good traits). But, his arm is better than Jimmy's, and he's clearly more athletic. There's a bunch of raw talent there.

I mean, what does Jimmy do? Run play-action (which simplifies reads) and hand it off. On drop back passing, is he particularly good? Not really. Jimmy has statistically been underwhelming at straight up pocket passing. He makes his money off of play-action. So that's what you'd be risking with Lance. Going from okay-to-bad on the drop back passing game to horrid.

That, and you'd be risking getting another player (or players).

Yup, posted this in the Mock Draft room. Really like the Ben Cleveland pick. Eric Stokes is a wildcard to me, still.
That draft to me screams "We're going to be last in the division in 2021 but might be better in 2022."

Wyatt Hubert is the best pick in that mock, IMO. Trey Lance is a big mystery. Nobody knows what they're getting or when he'll be ready to play. It could be years before he's ready to see the field. Eric Stokes looks like a poor athlete on tape and undersized. Not a good combo for a guy who will see DeAndre Hopkins, DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. Ben Cleveland is a nice pick for a POWER SCHEME-whoever made that mock must be smoking crack. Dude is 350 lbs and a poor athlete.

Stop it

stokes can play man. Both Georgia CBs can play.

I agree with the Cleveland pick that's a head scratcher...you know who else isn't a massive athletic guard though? Tomlinson. I would like to see who's on the board when they made some of these picks.

and we will disagree on Lance all day. He shouldn't be a day 1 starter and I'm assuming JG would be restructured and the starter in 2021 in this scheme...

If you have some time this is worth a watch. Waldman knows his s**t. Can't tell you how many times he brought up Shanahan or guys that run his offense in this.

His comp for Lance is Steve McNair. I'll take that with shanny and all our playmakers all day at 12th overall.

I've seen that clip. I also watched the rest of his games. There are games where Lance looks awful(ie UCA). The truth is nobody knows what they're getting with Trey Lance because his body of work is tiny. This isn't debatable. It's a fact.

I like Trey Lance, but I'm also not going to ignore the facts because I like him. Dude is the biggest mystery in the draft. He's slotted to get drafted in the top-10 based on ONE season. Just step away and think how crazy that is. There are countless QBs that had one great season and completely imploded afterwards. And the one game he had this season was trending in a bad direction.

Laken Tomlinson weighs 310 lbs now. That's a 40 lbs difference lol.

Stokes is tiny. I wouldn't want him outside vs DK Metcalf or Hopkins. He also lacks the desired twitch/cod from an outside corner. We have no idea what DeMeco's secondary is going to look like, so I'm basing this on general desired traits from CB.

That mock draft sucks ass. 49ers are not a better team in 2021 with that mock.

No doubt it's risky, if he was a 3 yr starter he's a top 5 pick. It's a small sample size BUT the sample size isn't full of useless air raid/spread offense stuff. It's pro-style concepts like we use here. He's call his own protections. He's running out of center using play-actions & bootlegs like a boss. He's got top end traits.

please don't bring up one gloried practice game from a Covid season. That s**t has no baring on him imo. If he throws for 400 yards and 3 TDs in that weird random game it doesn't change my stance on him either way.

I would like to see who else is available when some of the other picks were made. I think Stokes is pretty good. Campbell might be the better fit for us.

FWIW Tomlinson was almost 330Lbs coming out of Duke. I wouldn't call Cleveland a sloppy 350 either

I would probably go edge sooner as well.

Laken was 323 lbs at the combine. He lost weight(down to 310) to get more athletic here. Cleveland being that lean at that weight is even worse, not better. He's not a great athlete to start, and him having that low body fat means his room to improve his athleticism is limited. Dude is a beast for a power scheme, tho. But again, that doesn't help us.

The point still stands with Lance and nothing can change it. It's a massive risk that I don't see the 49ers willing to undertake. Someone's ass is getting fired after 2021 if this team doesn't make the playoffs, and IMO, Lance ain't helping us in 2021.

I forgot to add that making mocks before FA is so dumb. I understand it's a business for the draft network, but it's pointless without knowing what holes a team has going into the draft. And right now, the 49ers have a f**k ton of holes.

I don't see KS rolling the dice on Lance. I like him but his sample size is scary.

I mean they traded for Laken at that weight, he didn't roll into SF at 310lbs, but whatever it's just a mock and a 5th rd pick or something lol.

Wait you think someone is gonna get fired if they don't make the playoffs? Like who? Kyle? come on know... IMO Getting a rookie QB if anything gives them more leeway because there's at least a plan.

Everything is a risk, it's a HUGE risk to assume Jimmy is gonna stay healthy a full yr, let alone play well for a full season. He get's hurt and you have no legit backup or some sort of long-term plan, that's a reason for a firing just as well..... SF misses out on another group of QBs that turn into FQBs because they're afraid of taking a risk, IMO is just as big a reason to get fired if we're going down that road.

Are we acting like 4 losing seasons out of 5 will be acceptable? There won't be any more excuses. If the 49ers miss the playoffs next season, f**k yes, someone's ass is getting fired. Again, 4 out of 5 losing seasons. Unfortunately, it'll likely be John Lynch with Kyle getting one more chance. I love Kyle, but it's time to win; now; often. People around here are getting way too comfy losing.

Yes, everything is a risk. Apply basic risk assessment. I'm not saying we should go into 2021 fully depending on Jimmy. You can sign/trade/draft someone else to replace him or put behind him. But you know what's ironic part about this statement with this? That's exactly what we'd be doing if we drafted Trey Lance because he wouldn't help us in 2021. Jimmy goes down, and this dude will get exposed. 318 career pass attempts. No, not college attempts in 1 season--career. That's since high school LOL. Not sure how anyone expects this dude to be playing anytime soon.

How is it time to go deep into the playoffs with this going on....

-40 FAs
-Not knowing if our $27M QB is actually any good, let alone able to play a full season
-Having only the 12th overall pick (not some top 5 pick to get more picks or a game changer)
-No real money to improve all the holes you say we have
-Bosa coming off an ACL and nothing on the other side
-ONE starting DB signed etc

drafting a OL/CB or whatever at 12 isn't gonna change all those issues above.

I mean if you're expect some massive run into the playoffs or someone get's fired, lynch better start packing his bags now s**t even the Rams who we always beat got better.

Yes everything is a risk....Jimmy goes down the season is lost regardless. Hell even if he plays they might not be good enough to go to the playoffs based on our division....You're putting ALL your eggs in his basket by rolling with him and that salary (on a watered down roster). They have no money to have a legit backup.

Getting a rookie at the very least gives them a plan, Jimmy goes down it's over anyway. No rookie is gonna take them to the playoffs YR1 BUT at least there's a plan...if not then what? We rolling into 2022 hovering around 500 and out of reach for a top rookie QB? People gonna b***h about giving up picks, saying it's too risky? We gonna roll with Jimmy again? I mean when is it okay to go get a guy? IMO it's riskier to do nothing. If you're a HC/GM I'd rather get fired for going risky and trying to get that game changer vs getting fired because I was afraid to do anything.

Look I'm not saying Lance has to be the guy but sweet baby Jesus can we for once go get the dude...instead of sitting there waiting for s**tty paints Mac Jones or some day 3 project?
