Watched his pro day. Exactly what I had expected. Big arm dual-threat QB. Quite well built, the ball rockets off his hand, throws a nice deep ball, just needs more repetitions.

At the end of the day, if Kyle likes him, he will have to go and get him. None of that let's draft a D-lineman first and find a QB in the later rounds. Been there and done that. Not only did we miss out on Mahomes, we also ended up with a bust in Solomon Thomas who is about to leave the 9ers.

The way I look at the QBs in this draft class is this, Trevor Lawrence is a lock to go to the Jags at 1, Saleh looks like he will want to grab Zach Wilson at 2, then it will be Trey Lance for me over Fields. I don't know who Shanny likes, but he will have to put his name on whoever he is going to take. If Jimmy is not our guy in the long term, then he better have an answer for it. And by that I don't mean just relax and see who falls to the 9ers at 12. No, Shanny needs to show his conviction and go and get the guy he wants much like Andy Reid trading up to grab Mahomes. Besides, if Shanny were to miss this year's draft, next year's QB draft class is supposed to be absolutely barren while we will most likely be drafting even lower at the same time. So, if he is not taking a QB or taking a proper QB in this draft, the chances are Jimmy will play out the rest of his contract.

Who said that?

I don't disagree with your premise—Shanny will have to go get his guy eventually. But I'm not so sure next year's class is barren. The class will feature guys like JT Daniels, Carson Strong, and others.
Zach Wilson and Mac Jones were barely on the first round radar at this point of their college career and now both will go in the 1st.

Saying that next years QB class is barren without giving that class the extra year to develop/improve and raise their stock is a bit premature imo.

Next years class is looking pretty good to me, not sure what the heck people are looking at. There's no Trevor Lawrence headliner type prospect but a whole lot of good ones and as you mentioned, some QBs are going to rise way up during the season.

Sam Howell
Spencer Rattler
JT Daniels
Carson Strong
Tyler Shough
Matt Corral
Kedon Slovis
Desmond Ridder

Not a huge fan of all of those QBs but they all have plenty of talent and ability to be first rounders with good seasons.

I'd happily take Carson Strong or Sam Howell if they passed on a QB this year.

Rewatching his Pro Day. Lance's feet look cleaner and less lazy. The fact that he basically had the entire year to focus on improving his mechanics is a big deal. I still think he's getting a bit long in his release, but hey, what the hell do I know? He also didn't seem to be dipping or if he did it was ever so slightly.

Personally, I like Trey Lance a bit more than Justin Fields. I just feel like he's more fluid and natural as a thrower, and his eyes and processing are much quicker than Fields. People want to attribute Fields' slow processing to the Ohio State offense. That's fine, but it's still there on tape. Overall, Trey Lance is very nice. He's not Zach Wilson, but he's nice.

Agree. I'm just not a fields fan.

Field is a one read QB - if the first guy is not open, he takes off.
Yeah I think trey lance has the chance to be pretty good with his improved foot work and he is a impressive athlete. I'm just not a fan of Justin fields because his throwing mechanics are not very good and his throwing motion is just too damn slow. Plus he doesn't throw guys open and doesn't process information fast enough. I would say Trevor Lawrence and then Zach Wilson and then trey lance. It's too bad that trey lance will probably get picked by Atlanta at 4 and the niners won't get a chance to draft him.

Well that's not even close to true

Yeah overall it's not as bad as people are saying...thing is they will more than likely have a worse pick in 2022. So we're gonna be in the same boat trying to move up for one of the top end QB forced to give up more capital.

people are gonna b***h about "moving up" like this yr and say we need to take care of other positions. It's a broken record every yr.

much rather go get a guy and let him sit this yr, then trying to do it all over again next yr and possibly having to invest more capital.

That's just an absolute falsehood. I'm not sure if you believe that, or are throwing out something you've heard, but it's BS.

You're all setting yourselves up for disappointment. Shanahan is not a coach who's capable of / interested in developing a QB.

Well damn if you say so, I guess thats that.

Let's fire him and go hire a guy that is known for working magic with QBs. What's Hue Jackson up to these days?

Overreacting much?

And who said something about firing him?

It is a well-known fact that Shanahan prefers experienced established QBs in the mould of K. Cousins, Hoyer, Schaub or M. Ryan.
I thought the 49ers attended his pro day?

This makes me think we are trading up to get Lance.

Like Jimmy Garoppolo? Who had all of what...four or five starts before the 49ers acquired him?

Saying that Shanahan prefers established veterans isn't the same thing as claiming that he isn't capable of or willing to develop a young passer. I'm sure when it comes down to it, every coach would prefer a talented and proven veteran QB over a rookie with an unknown career trajectory.

But if that option isn't available and instead you see a guy that you think can be the next Matt Ryan, the next Cousins or heck even the next Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson, I'm sure Shanahan will have interest but he's not going to draft a QB just because a desperate and whiny fan base wants a quarterback, ANY quarterback.
