Justin Fields QB - Ohio State

Justin Fields QB - Ohio State

Having Fields will only expand the playbook. Every rookie QB has things to work on including Lawrence, Wilson, etc. How people can ignore his level of competition vs results is amazing. He outplayed Lawrence in their last meeting against Clemson, and Lawrence had 400 yds passing. Fields threw for 6 TD's in that game I believe. They all had off games, as does every player that has ever laced them up. If I were to guess, I believe the 49ers are equally enamored with Fields and Wilson ... hence the trade up to #3 being enough of a move. I think that either QB will be fine with them.

People being so high on Lawrence as to make him a no-doubt, can't-miss stud is baffling to me. He faced s**t competition in the ACC, and in the two games he missed in 2020 due to Covid, Clemson put up 74 points. 40 of those points were vs Notre Dame, who they scored 34 against in the ACC Championship that Lawrence started. The backup QB played better vs Notre Dame than he did.

You conveniently left out his mane, which is the primary driver of his draft position.

The deal Chicago offered Seattle for Russell was more valuable than what we gave up for 3.

True plus Russell is a proven champion

I knew this move up was for Fields because I had him behind Lawrence from the break. I never looked at Wilson to much because of the level of competition but NOW after more seasoned spectators has highlighted him I can see why he would be number 2. That said this puts Fields for me at least as the clear 3 so why not Fields?

Mac Jones was not even in my running for top 3. Top 5 yes but top 3? Not me bro

Another thing as related to the Deshaun Watson rumblings from earlier in the offseason and how we were in the running for him and HOU wanting at least 3 first rd picks. Ain't it in the least bit peculiar that we not soon thereafter made this trade up to top 3 AFTER news broke about Deshaun Watson and then we surrendered 3 first round picks to do it? We did not bite on Stafford or Darnold. We went top 3 AFTER that news and did not nab those other QBs so who do we now want aside from the QBs available earlier and how does a top 3 QB compare?

This smells a whole lot like Fields to me and not Mac Donalds but we shall see

We were looking to trade up for weeks though. It was said we had spoken to Miami, Atlanta, and Cincinnati, with Miami always being the most serious talks.

However, how the hell do you go from Watson, to Jones? They are as different as it gets. Fields matches Watson far more as does Lawrence and Wilson.

Looking to move up is also a good way to see who is interested in QBs.

You also have misinformation right now. There were reports we tried to move up to Jets pick, then reports came out saying we never reached out to the Jets.

At this point it's just a waiting game. I do know that our team has done an excellent job of keeping things in house until the move is made. A bunch of examples have been brought up already

Buckner trade, Aiyuk love, trade for #3, etc..

What Kyle has said lately doesn't match Jones. It does match Fields and potentially even Lance. Selecting Jones over those guys just seems so odd. I know Kyle has his love fests but I just can't think he's so tone deaf to where the league is now that he legit thinks giving up all that draft capital for Jones is the right move.

Either that or he watched too much Draft Day. Though he needs to remember they took the OSU guy at their pick....

Yeah I am trying to ignore it all and just see what happens come draft night. Hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst lol
please let Colin be right

Expanding the playbook is the hope. That again, only happens if he gets there with the mental aspects.

As for what Fields did to Lawrence. Jones did outplay Fields and put up 460+ yards and 5 TDs.

Here are some quotes from NBCSports on Fields:

Fields can escape a pass rush, all right. But his numbers tumbled dramatically when he was under pressure. His QBR was just 22.6 when pressured, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

What the scouts are saying:
"Fields has all of the ability in the world."

"He's like a ball of clay. He can be molded."

"I like his physical and mental maturity. He's a man -- both physically and mentally."

"I like the fact he's been a winner since Day 1."

"He needs to be around football 7/24/365 because I don't see him as a natural, instinctual quarterback when it comes to timing and chemistry with receivers, tight ends, and backs."

"When they played, it was like the varsity against the JV. His accuracy is not as good as what his completion percentage shows."

"I think he's going to be a really good player."

"He'll have to learn to turn down hits."

"I'm not a big Fields guy. Under pressure, he's OK. But he has a slow release."

"Kyle (Shanahan) might look at him like he's too talented to pass up."

One of the reasons they will be drafted high is because Jones consistently hit them instride.

The 1st game that they lost went to overtime. So they scored the same amount in regulation.

I could have it them in stride with that amount of protection and how open they were lol.

Fields in Alabama would have been even more ridiculous. Jones in OSU would have been worse then Fields without question.

AJ Mccarron did the same, Hurts did the same, Tua did the same and the guy that is taking over for Mac is already doing it in practice and I'm positive will do the same. What is the common denominator in all of it?
