Rashawn Slater - OL

Hypothetical situation. How would you guys feel if we let Trent Williams walk, draft Slater at 12 overall to play LT. We use the money saved from not giving Trent a huge contract on upgrading other parts of the roster.

Need a 1st round QB. Hard pass on Mond, Trask, any of the other later QBs.

No Slater at 12. Sign T. Williams. Draft Jimmy's replacement at 12 or higher if have to move up.

I agree with both of you that we should bring back Trent Williams. Just throwing out the scenario is all. Trent has said he is exploring Free Agency and you never know what can happen.

Do you guys think Slater is a viable NFL caliber LT? I believe so, not at Trent's level but I believe he will be pretty darn good.

I think so, handling Chase Young is good enough for me.
I think he's gonna go higher then people think

I had seen him mocked to be higher than 12 several times, and have a feeling he will be gone before 12. At this point, my feeling is Slater is my top choice because solidifying the o-line is a must. I don't know who we will take, but have a starting five of:

T. Williams - Tomlinson - Mack - Slater - McG

This would be such a formidable line in my mind. If he's gone, the 4 players in order I'd like to take would be:

1) Lance
2) Surtain II
3) Farley
4) Jones

It'll be interesting once free agency hits next week to see the route Shanahan/Lynch go in to gear up for the draft.

I like him better at guard personally, but yes he'd be my pick if Trent is gone. Would definitely be all in on Linsley and Lawson in FA at that point with the 24 mil

Play him at RG this year, RT next year?

Might have to move up to get him, especially after his pro day and if Trent signs elsewhere.
It's never a good idea to go into a draft pigeonholed into one position, especially a OT.

We might be lucky to have Vera-Tucker as an IOL option at 12

Absolutely, but it might be out of our hands. To be fair it doesn't seem like we had a choice, he didn't want the Franchise tag and the low cost of the trade probably reflected the potential difficulty of his contract negotiation.

I'm ok if we sign Linsley or Mack and then move Brunskill to LT.

We'll still need a LT, but it shouldn't be an absolute desperate must draft.

That said if Slater is there it breaks all ties if the grades are similar.

I have zero faith in Brunskill. Did he play left tackle at all last season? I don't remember if he did. I know Justin Skule did against the Packers and gave up 3 sacks.

If the draft goes like I think it will and all 4 QBs are gone by pick 8, I would consider moving up to 9 to get ahead of Dallas and snag Slater. It would depend on the cost obviously but if the cost was just our 3rd rd supplemental pick I would do it. I dont trust our backup OTs to start and we do need a stud for the next decade on the outside.

No, but he did the year before when Staley was injured and fared pretty well

Skule did as well, but when he played in 2020, he was god awful.
